    Why do people study it? It has not many applications. Just study something like engineering or maths and you'll end up with the whole same career opportunities.

    They study it because they enjoy it and because they want to learn about the mechanisms that govern economic growth etc.

    Not everyone simply wants to maximise their career opportunities, though there is nothing wrong with doing so if you wish to.

    engineering and maths are close but there not the same and no the career opportunities are different for them.
