What is meant by the term "simple" girl? I never really understood but the term does get thrown about in the older generation (I volunteer at a care home occasionally) none of my friends seem to know! Help!

What type of characteristic would you say best described a simple girl??

Simple girl would be a girl that is down to earth, the girl next door kinda type. Pretty but not over the top in any sort of way. Just a girl

Simple can have a few different connotations.

It can mean someone down to earth, uncomplicated and low maintenance (literally simple). It's intended as a compliment.

It can mean someone who is dumb, implying their mind is simple. Or can mean something else (boring, unintelligent and so on). Obviously insults.

In my experience I tend to hear simple thrown around as an insult more than a compliment. "Oh he's a bit simple", "she's a simple girl" to mean they're not particularly intelligent, or even have a disability.

Indeed. People are asshats. I should note this is exclusively from older people, so maybe there's a generation thing going on somewhere.

I've seen this term thrown around by my mum and what she means is a "plain Jane" minimalistic type who doesn't bother with make up, isn't fashionable and doesn't keep up with the latest trends, etc.
