I'm going to move this to the History university courses forum so that you can hopefully get more replies.

    Good luck on your dissertation.

The most logical and straightforward response I'm going to tell you is to narrow down your 20th Century. That's 100 years in 3 different countries so I really don't know what you expect people to be giving you.

Another option is you could look at the new A-level History spec and gain some new ideas from there if you're flat-out of ideas.

I don't know what kind of history you're into; saying a country's history isn't going to help anyone give you advice. Are you interested in their government, politics, education, race and human rights, maybe their law, their history of health and disease, their technological advancement or perhaps even warfare and weapons of mass destruction? You see my point.

You need to find a topic (not just a country cause that really doesn't help - that should come later). Think of something you perhaps never got to study at A-level and throughout your degree that you wish to do now.

There's loads of events in the 20th Century. America was known for their Race and Civil Rights as well as Human Rights like LGBT etc and Warfare. Germany is known for WW2/Hitler and the Holocaust and Britain was known for WW1, handing back Hong Kong to China in 1997 after more than 150 years of British rule, women's rights and education, etc.

You need to find either a theme or a key movement in history where you want to specialise in. I don't know your requirements of your dissertation; i.e do you have to over a certain amount of years, focus on a political leader, etc etc. But, I would definitely start by looking at themes like medicine, warfare, technology or movements such as Civil Rights, Surrogate, Gay Rights, Anti-Psychiatry, Nazism etc etc.

    Good luck! :flutter:
