You guys I need some advice on this statement. Im aplying for a foundation course in Art and design at The Arts Institute at Bournemouth. The person I talked to in their school sadi that they will mainly be looking at my portfolio. But tell me what you guys think of my personal statement:

Like every child I was very fickle with what I wanted to be when I “grow up”. But there was only one thing consistent with what interested me the most, Photography. As far back as I can remember I have had a fascination for taking pictures. Every time there was an excuse to take pictures I took them. As kids I even made my friends pose for me many times in elaborate sets I would think up. But it was not until a few years ago that I actually thought of photography as a potential career. Modeling for television commercials in the Philippines opened my eyes to the possibility in a career in photography. Watching professional photographers so into their craft amazed me. I felt I needed to be doing that too. I wanted to do that too. I wanted to be a part of that and an education in photography will help me be part of that. You see, I love sharing experiences with others, and I think that photographs are the best way to share your experiences with others. Experiences, sights, places and people that some are not that privileged to see. An Institute such as yours with an international atmosphere is a perfect place for me to pursue an education in photography. I have traveled around the world and lived in many different cultures, and studying in a multicultural environment would help me feel very much at home.
its good. mine was along those lines for design. i wrote about how i wanted tow work in an up and coming industry and be allowed to develop freely and individually.

one thing. dont say kids. and what about photographers you like? some more wider context maybe. apart from that, its gd!!

I can't offer much advise on the art side of things (I'm a scientist  ), but your PS is written in quite a collequial (sp?) style and sounds a bit like your talking casually to someone. Try to stop repeating words like "want" and "you see". Perhaps also make it a little longer and break it up into small paragraphs.

Other than that you do come across as being quite passionate about Photography. However, as you are applying for Art and Design, perhaps mention that despite the fact your main interest lies in Photography you wish to broaden your perspectives on other aspects or art and design?

Your PS sounds good methinks! I wish I was applying for art..... I just aren't sure of the employment and things like that after an art degree. it's about 43% or summit employment rate. You sound so passionate about photography. I'm desperately trying to make my PS sound as though I'm passionate about science (applying for med or pharmacology) but my heart lies with art - always has. Well done for following your heart, whoever you are! Art rules!

PS (Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy science.)

    Hi Denant,
I think you're PS sounds pretty good. Maybe rephrase "As kids I ..." with "children", but you are right, the tutors at AIB will be mainly concerned with your portfolio and your passion for photography and whether you are committed to it. Have you applied for the Media based foundation? This is more specialist that the broader Art and Design based course. Is there a photographer that you particularly admire? Wolfgang Tillmans and Nick Knight are former AIB photography students which might be worth dropping in.
I doubt you will have many problems getting in providing yor portfolio is good enough though, and the Foundation tutors are pretty constructive in what you need to do to get in.
    Hope this helps
    Good luck

I just finished doing an art foundation, you can see mine if you like. But it is very Long! too long i think!
yours is good, because you have demonstrated you have enthusiasm for the subject. but i think you should also include what photographers you like and why, what galleries you go to (just make it up if you dont go!) what issues you like to explore, explain your work and if you've taken any courses in it

As a foundation is a bit of everthing, i think it would be a good idea also to state your other interests, and your interest in experimenting and learning about other mediums and artists....this will show that you have an open mind and are open to new ideas.

but like others have said they really dont pay much attention to the PS, it's really not that important. it's mainly the portfolio! make sure the portfolio is easily accessible and neatly presented. and you'll be fine
