Post exam Depression/revision withdrawal

I know this is going to sound insane, but ever since exams have finished I have felt complete rubbish. I just don't know what to do with myself! Before the exams i was a bundle of energy (which is really strange for me, I've never really been able to get into revision before now), and now my motivation is completly zapped, and i'm finding it impossible to properly chill out without getting feelings of guilt as though I should be doing something important.

I was really looking foward to this summer, but so far, I havent enjoyed it one bit. The moment I got home after my last exam i just burst into tears! AHH!

Anyone else going through this and got any tips to beat it?
Well, there's nothing you can do to change what's on your exam scripts now. And face it, if you've done badly you won't know till August and there's nothing you can do until September, so why worry? Worrying is natural, but don't feel guilty. Your part is over, and no matter how much you screwed up or how much more you should've done, nothing can be gained by worrying now. Accept that you'll worry about it closer to the time and that you've deserved a break.

i dont know what to do with myself either. Will probably get a job beginning of August, but at the moment im going to bed at like 4am and getting up at 3pm and just mooching round, playing the odd game of tennis and footy. when the exams starting getting close i was like up at 8am and worked till 2am for about a month, now i just cba doing anything. Normally i love doing nothing, but being so lazy, and being to lazy to stop being lazy, is kind of lame atm. The only reason why im still awake atm is coz i cba putting the new bed covers on my bed.

I just say find some structure to your day, it will take your mind of the exams. Maybe go the gym during hte day or go for a run during the evening. Do some reading, whatever. For me, 3 weeks have already gone by with one day merging indescriminately into another.
Keep yourself busy. See your friends, go shopping, go to the cinema, go bowling, play a sport, go on a few day trips somewhere, go on holiday, get a job.

I feel you both. My depression started kicking in DURING my exams (well the last couple, as I'm resigned to the fact I failed - AGAIN), which really screwed me up for my Maths AEA (and continued ever since). I've perked up over that last week though (finally tackled my garden - yay!!) but has kicked in again since my dad has come on his hols (cos I can't do ANYTHING around him) so I'm desperately trying to find work to avoid him lol!

I'm feeling lazy as well, and have been applying for jobs but no luck. Anyway, over half of the ideas mentioned above involve costs, and if you don't have any money, then it cannot really happen.

I've just been doing random stuff with my computer now, but now I think I'll get back into the rhythm and finish reading some books and newspapers, get out of the house and go college. This may seem odd, but I can still go college and do some things there.

Do anything basically that cuts out your boredom. You could always try and get the new Harry Potter book if your interested in them from the library!
My problems have not been as acute as yours, Pennz316, but I have been somewhat listless during the summer since my exams finished. I would recommend finding some kind of goal - setting tasks for yourself is very useful and it's something that I do. For example, learning a new word or fact every day and then impressing everyone else with what you know by the time you go back to school. There'll always be something to keep you going, whether it's knowledge or leisure or commitment to a charity/cause, etc. Good luck in finding something.

I second Pennz316's feeling of guilt, and it's a horrible feeling to posess; Especially when relaxation and is encouraged so much by parents and teachers alike, Glancing at AS work only adds to the guilt, that I should be doing something (as well as the feeling of foreboding ) I suppose it's something that's perfectly natural. In college I have a feeling that there will be no time for this listlessness, so let's make the best of what time we have left!

I completely agree with the points made above, half of the things mentioned above require money, which can be difficult for some people, finding a job may also prove difficult. Once we start college, we won't have free time like this, so make the most of it. I sympathise with the thread starter, its easy to get depressed in the holidays, just chill out, play video games, go park, play with your mates, anything that removes your boredom.

I know EXACTLY what you mean. The summer A level exams were the hardest i have ever done, both the exams and the amount of effort i put into them. My mates laugh at me, but they really drained me physically and mentally, infact 2 weeks prior to my first exam i was violently ill, went to doctors and he said stress caused it lol.

Anyway, the key to succeeding whilst we have all this spare time is to get yourself busy. Personally, im redecorating the house.... and it pretty much takes up my whole day... and occassionally my mates are coming round, so we can combine the two; hard work with a few drinks / games afterwards...

I suppose you could read books... but they take up alot of time, even if your a skim-reader. I agree with those comments above, about getting a job, however, most jobs in this period have already been occupied, and i know how hard it is; ive been looking for the past month, and cant find a dam thing !. You will need to look for branches / supermarkets that have just opened, so you can guarantee yourself a job..

Its so hard to keep busy when you have so much time. Its like a 50:50 for me. Either lounge around the house all day doing **** all, or do something worth doing. Also, keeping busy helps you sleep, i find that when i do nothing all day but go on the pc or play games, it takes me like 2-3 hours to get to sleep lol..

Its hard to go out with friends aswell, because if you have no job, theres no money haha.. anyway, just try to get around it, keep busy and be positive...

As for this depressed, post exam phase, well its to be expected, the feeling of trying that hard for something doesnt leave you, so the transition from doing ALOT to NOTHING feels weird right ? anyway... good luck with it
see..i didnt think about results until this past week or so, ive just been obsessing about it in my dreams mostly during the day i try to keep occupied by other stuff. But seriously though, i think they should pass a law on how quick to give the results out, because its such a long wait atm i hate it

i got a bit of revision 'cold turkey' lol. i still wanted to do some maths even though exams had all finished

im starting to feel stressed and a little down now just waiting for results day to come

i just got back from holiday today and although i enjoyed my time away, some of the time i was a bit stressy and im sure its because results are not far away

How is everyone feeling today?

JIMI, I know what you mean... for the first couple of days I honestly felt like I should be revising for the next exam. Problem was, I'd finished them all!

I'm glad you enjoyed your time away... try to remember the best bits - if you just dwell on the times you were stressy you'll end up thinking your holiday was crap!

The weather doesn't help. Where's all that glorious sunshine we had last week?!

In case you guys still haven't kicked out the boredom as you haven't managed to get a job, why not apply to your local charity and help out by volunteering? It really does make you feel better as you know you've given back to the community and also you gain work experience if that's what was letting you down in getting a job.

I myself have got a job again back where I worked last year (lucky me!) and also I'm volunteering at BHF in Uxbridge. Got so much experience already and made some new friends!

As I have such a busy schedule, I hardly remember the fact that the results are like less than 48 hours away, but nevertheless, it doesn't affect me as I'll just get the results and then go back down to the charity shop and carry on the day. I go to Uxbridge College and so its like a 5 minute walk or so from the charity shop.

If the results are bad, don't let it get to you, there's always another time. I know I got to do a few retakes, but that'll get sorted itself.

Last but not least, give yourself a motto which will help you get through the thick and bad times. Mine is "I'm a winner!". I've been doing that so often these past couple of weeks, that I'm back on track in no time.

With that being said, its time for me to go to bed so I can go to work tomorrow. Good luck everyone!

It's never easy to get over, but it starts with you moving on - however hard it may be. The best way to do that is to make sure you fully apply yourself to whatever it is you're doing. If you can do that, then not only should you feel more fulfilled, but you'll also (hopefully) be more successful with future results and endeavours! Hope this helps!
