Why does Liechtenstein have a customs post on the Austrian border when it is part of the European Economic Area and European Free Trade Association? Don't those two organisations allow tariff free trade between EU and EEA and EFTA countries?

Yes indeed but that has a lot to do with the tax system and business regulations.

    Switzerland does too...

It is staffed mostly for tax reasons (VAT).
