Hey Knogle, do you think Chicago is better in Economics than the LSE in actual quality? I know the perceived quality of economics at LSE is superb.

I really can't comment on the specifics - I know too little (especially about Chicago) to do so. I'll find it hard to disagree if someone said that the Economics departments at the two universities were on equal footings. With that said, it is clear that the LSE has a better overall and international rep than its American counterpart.

I asked because of the citation count:

LSE alumi, there are more notable international figures that staudied at lse
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_London_School_of_Economics_people
stanford alumni,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Stanford_University_people#Foreign_politicians
in my opinion where i am from LSE has a better rep than stanford. especially for people who want to go into investment banking or politics.

heres a list of ucl alumni.

Also its seems to me that americans have a lot more pride that brits in the uni they attended, so i bet the stanford list is more complete than the brit ones, because i can imagine someone like davtherave sitting on the internet all day editting wikipedia.
Davetherave went to a British university.

in my opinion the arwu rankings are not that useful, it just shows how rich a uiniversity is. hence random US universities are ranked higher than the lse.
I personally prefer the thes rankings because it shows what other academics and employers think about the uni, and hence the reputation.

There isn't any American university that is untouchable; that was my previous point.

In terms of what it's considered to be elite for: law, business, medicine, political science (specifically security studies), economics, engineering, education, and psychology, off the top of my head.

I didn't stay there for postgrad because:
1. I was ready to leave--I loved it but I'm not a California person at the end of the day
2. The MA in International Policy Studies was done in the same department as my BA, and I had already taken 5 classes that were graduate level, with grad students in my seminars. Wouldn't really have made sense to stay on.
3. It's important to have degrees from more than one country if you are really serious about a career in the international sector.

TBH the points on this thread have been regurgitated countless times and I think we've all had plenty of opportunity to indicate our positions and express our views on the matter. I am in favour of locking this thread. Whomever chances upon it in the future can draw his/her own conclusions based on the posts here and fresh developments/facts as of the time of reading.

i never trusted this ranking since they put manchester and edingborough ahead of bristol and warwick which is total BS.
Reply 110
personally it seems fair at the top end. because in the arwu surely the best unis or undergrad cant all be in the usa, this is more international, and seems to reflect reputaions. also in arwu lesser unis like ucla, wisconsin, and other random unis are better than Upenn, tokyo Uni, imperial, ucl, john hopkins, univeristy of toronto, duke, manchester, bristol...... the list goes on
Honestly, to a certain extent all these league rankings and ramblings about which university is more famous is ridiculous. Reputation does matter, but either more than you realize or not as much as you realize. Let's use the hypothetical example of two people going for a job (since it's always two people going for a job). One has, say, a Stanford degree and one has an LSE degree, since these seem to be bandied about quite a bit here. If one or the other gets the job over the other, it's not going to be because of where they got their degree. The guy hiring you doesn't give a crap about league rankings, probably is too busy to even look for them, and would probably think you a fool if you bring them up. What's far more important to an employer is 'can this guy do the job?' Going to a more popular university just gets a lot of 'oohs and aahs' out of people, but practically, there is little to no advantage with having a Harvard degree or a Princeton degree. Just like Oxford and Cambridge--no one gives a crap which one you went to.

When choosing which one to go to--assuming you are looking at universities of roughly equal 'value,' then your best bet is to look for one with a location you like, a department you like, or even just which campus is prettier/dorms are nicer.

Hmm...to respond to this (which I'd rather not because it's just a personal attack on me and nothing to do with this thread)

1. I never claimed an Africa fund was successful because it doesn't exist. I did research for it and it exists in nascent form, but it hasn't been running and won't be for several years. As far as Africa goes, I don't think you even want to touch that because you know nothing about it. Needless to say, the US has strategic oil interests which have led to the establishment of military forces in that region, Angola has just joined OPEC, and the commodities markets (which include products from Africa like gold and precious metals) are the hottest financial markets in the world.

That's a first, really, that commodity markets is representative of how hot the financial market is.

In terms for funds raised in IPOs for 2006:
#1 Hong Kong, China
#2 London
#3 New York
http://www.businessweek.com/investor/content/dec2006/pi20061227_944762.htm
More than any particular deal, the most important IPO news of 2006 may be that this was the year when the U.S. lost its claim as the premier location for companies looking to go public. With emerging markets booming and major exchanges such as Hong Kong and London luring the biggest deals, it will be a difficult title for New York to recover.

Also,
The deal value of China's three largest exchanges—Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Hong Kong (the latter was the champ for 2006 IPO value)—amounted to almost $53 billion in 2006. This beat out Britain's $48.3 billion and the $45.8 billion chalked up by the combined NYSE and Nasdaq.

And from the figures realised for IPO activities for the first half of this year, Shanghai, China is on track to be top 3 for this year.

For stock exchange size: According to wikipedia

Twenty Largest Stock Exchanges by Market Capitalization as of July 12, 2007 (in trillions of US dollars)

1. NYSE Euronext - $20.692
2. Tokyo Stock Exchange - $4.679
3. NASDAQ - $4.163
4. London Stock Exchange - $4.023
5. Hong Kong Stock Exchange - $2.124
6. Toronto Stock Exchange - $1.985
7. Frankfurt Stock Exchange (Deutsche Börse) - $1.973
8. Shanghai Stock Exchange - $1.738
9. Madrid Stock Exchange (BME Spanish Exchanges) - $1.515
10. Australian Securities Exchange - $1.324

I guess these are more representative of the situation than the commodity market at Africa alone.

Lastly, these are not personal attacks, both rather just speaking things factually. At least I never call someone an idiot like someone else did a page or two back.

The international ranking is based largely on research power; on those criteria, Manchester and Edinburgh considerably outstrip both Warwick and Bristol, which are pretty small universities.

Shanghai Seen As 2007 IPO Capital

With a total of $41.7 billion raised, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange topped the world in the value of initial public offerings in 2006. Yet, Ernst & Young, the international accounting firm, forecast on Thursday that Shanghai would overtake Hong Kong for new listings in 2007.

Among the 51 stock exchanges in the survey, Hong Kong ranked No. 1 with 15.5% market share, followed by the London Stock Exchange, with a 15.0% share. The New York Stock Exchange was third, with 10.5%.

I have never set foot on China per se, but from the looks of it, it is on track to be a mega power soon.

But you are from neither the USA or the UK, so general opinions are hardly likely to be informed. (Although obviously there will be some people in the know.) I imagine the average random on the street over here has probably not even heard of Princeton or Stanford. And definatley not UPenn or Wharton or somewhere like that.

I dont even know how you can compare LSE to Stanford. Stanford is in a different class. Ask Shady Lane, she has attended both so is well positioned to answer.

i have set foot on china (shanghai) before i went here and i thought london would have a better skyline  Anyway, London is great because of the way the old mixes in with the new. Anyway from my country everyone was talking about harvard/princeton/yale/etc american universities as the top tier ones. When someone talks about cambridge/ oxford the first impression would be that of a "posh" university. But then again thats in terms of a popularity and impression contest more than anything

US News rankings are pretty crap. But I would trust an FT one a fair bit to be honest.

Yes, I agree that US News rankings are crap. They're overrated. It's not that I think ratings are useless - they can be helpful - but sometimes they're just so arbitrary to me. I just don't think, when having a discussion about how good a school is, that they should be the sole evidence that one university is better than another one, if that makes sense.

We're just saying that amongst the Ivies, HYP are a step in front of the rest.

This comment just made me think of something, and I was wondering if some UK students could give me their opinion. Do people in the UK, etc. know that the Ivy League is actually a sports league and that it refers to 8 schools? I was just wondering because when I was growing up, I didn't realise what Ivy meant. I just thought it referred to good schools in general, and not 8 specific schools. I really don't mean this comment to seem condescending. I'm genuinely curious! I think even a lot of Americans don't realise the distinction.
