Kinda like the appendix...what's it ACTUALLY for? Stopping the vagina from being infected and helping prevent infertility? Or somethin like that? It must have some kind of survival advantage.

The appendix, interestingly enough, is used by rabbits. As you may or may not they eat their faeces to re-digest them... and the appendix is used in their digestion of cellulose which takes a more effort  Think that was right anyway!

So, one could assume that humans used to use it back in the 'day, but it's a leftover piece of us that evolution hasn't quite got rid of just yet.

Nature is lazy. Not everything we have has survival usage. So the hymen... Could always turn it around though, back to primitive times, if a guy wasn't man enough to break through then maybe he wouldn't father strong enough children either
I thought it was used for digesting grass. (The appendix that is, not the hymen)
Reply 23
And what does grass contain?
CELLULOSE! Suck on that year 9 biology.

The hymen is supposed to protect the vagina before puberty I suppose. But it is pretty pointless. I mean, we have underwear for that now... we're not cave people...

i had a riding accident when i was younger which did mine....other parts of me hurt so much I didnt realise it had happened until the blood was pointed out....loosing virginity still hurt like hell though...although I think thats probably more to do with my bf as he's err..well equiped....should I say...took a while to get used to that!
Never seen a graphic so... um, close up. Great way to find out if your girlfriend is a virgin. Just ask her then check. She can't lie this way.

How do you tell if a guy is a virgin or not? A guy doesn't have a hymen...

-_-

The hymen can be broken by any number of things, including the rather popular use of tampons. Just because it's broken doesn't mean you've had sex.

You just check to see if his foreskin's broken...nuh.

Oh, and if he doesn't have one, he's either a pornstar, or jewish, in which case he's definately not a virgin.
Hmm, I always through that maybe the hymen was meant to be there to stop sexual abuse of children... because nature would not have put it there to prove virginity. I don't think nature cares about virginity. But the infection idea sounds good... Oh, and Hanah_101, I agree, but I don't think I'm quite nunnery material, so maybe never is very long time....

Well I've been lurking for a while wondering what my one thousandth post should be, so where better to put it than in a thread about hymens?

Question: In young girls, does the hymen completely cover the vagina? If so, when does it break enough to be like the picture in that article, considering the picture was of a virgin?

I should probably know this by now, being an 18 year old female..

Beware, there is a graphic picture on that page.

Given that the external urethral opening is situated forward of the hymen, that diagram is mis-leading and suggests that the hymen is sited in front of the urethra which is false, (Med student btw). Interesting thread, I am a virgin and can definitely feel something *give* on personal examination, after discussing hymens with a couple of friends bot non-virgins we came to the conclusion that, it is really difficult to ascertain if a girl is a technical virgin, ie has trhe hymen been ruptured by tampon insertion or say strenuous physical activities such as horse riding, gym etc.

Baby girls are born with a complete hymen, the hymen becomes incomplete in the lead up tp puberty, a hole is formed which allows menstrual blood to leave the vagina, the diagram quoted suggests that the hymen is located in front or at the external opening of the vagina, ie forward of the urethra, so if that would be the case as suggested by that diagram .....,how would a pre-puibescent girl be able to urinate through a complete hymen?

Ha! Hymens some girls have really fragile ones ,others have to have minor surgery to *tear* it, everyone is different, hence the popular misconception about the gush of blood experienced by a girl on first experiencing sexual intercourse, some girls experience pain and or bleeding some experience zero physical symptoms, no 2 girls are the same. This post should have been anon!! Is anon function not active atm?

I think that as the girl grows older the hymen weakens, and then by puberty it has been stretched enough to create an opening- afterall, the hymen doesn't grow, it just stretches. I'm not sure where I heard that though. :p:

The perforation occurs pre puberty for most girls, some girls may require surgical intervention for an *imperforate hymen* she would normally seek medical help as her menstrual blood would be unable to exit her vagina, resulting in pain and probably infection.

Solution is simple surgical operation to perforate the hymen.
