Start with a very pale grey to use as a undercoat then gradually build it up, using darker greys and then eventually black. Then put on a coat of mascara and finish it off with some black eyeliner (I tend to go for pencil as it smudges better for the whole smokey eye thing). I smudge it a little by dampening one of those double ended white stick things (some people use them to clean out their ears- they look like mini versions of those sticks they used to fight with on Gladiators- I forget what they're called) and gently smudge the eyeliner underneath my eye.
Don't put the eye shadow too close to your eyebrow otherwise you end up looking a bit like a panda.
Your best bet is to find a few examples in magazines and try and recreate them on yourself.

Oh and if you want to spice it up I use a hint of metallic eyeshadow (silver or midnight blue looks best on me because I've got pale skin and blue eyes) too.
