I'm working on the grade 1 material and I find that some songs I pick up really quickly like 'Man who sold the world' and some songs just die a death every time like 'Dear Darlin'.
My assumption is that certain songs are in a key that just doesn't work for my voice and I should not spend time on them.
Is this assumption correct? I don't want to miss out on valuable learning. :-)
Also I have the same issue with the scales. The sample is A major starting at A below middle C. I end up in head voice very quickly which makes me think I'm approaching it incorrectly. It seems like a real struggle for Grade 1. :-)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Certainly your voice will be better suited to a certain key for any given song.
Surely the scale thing/how quick you enter head voice depends on your range. If it's quite low then you will get it from that starting point, especially if it goes up a whole octave (the A above middle C is not comfortable for most males).
