    Hello everyone.

I am a UK student that will hopefully be studying at Aston University this year (provided I meet the offer). I have already applied for the tuition loan through student finance and have been accepted. I am now looking to apply for the maintenance loan (non-means tested) most likely tomorrow (Monday). If I apply at this time will I receive the first installment by the time the course starts (late September) or will I have to wait a lot longer because I have left it too late? I will be living at home and not moving into accommodation. I look forward to your responses.

    Thanks TSR!

There's no way for us to know. The last date on which SF guarantee to have your funding in place for the start of your course, was 31st May, so you've missed that deadline by a long way.

If the SF workload is small, you might be in luck. If a lot of people have left it late like you, then your money might arrive sometime during your first term. As a non-income assessed application yours should be very straightforward, but ultimately, your guess is as good as ours.*

In any case, you would not receive your first installment until you had enrolled at uni, usually during Induction or Freshers' Week. If your uni is on the ball, it should arrive a few days after that.

No, sorry. The university has to confirm to SF that you have actually turned up for the start of the academic year, before SF will release your money. Your SF should arrive a few days after you have enrolled/registered on campus.

If you urgently need money before your SF arrives, a student bank account will give you some sort of pre-arranged overdraft. But I suggest that this should be used for necessities like your accommodation deposit. You can pick up a reasonably priced laptop once your SF arrives, if you have money spare.
