What is the difference between a "sixth form" college and just a "college"?

Hi, i've been looking at colleges for September and i've come across something i don't quite understand.

Basically i see, "sixth form" colleges and then i see colleges without that "sixth form" term in it, even though both of them do the same courses ie. AS and A2. So what is the difference between the two?

Also my second question is, i know "sixth form" colleges have leavers day (End of 2nd year) i was wondering if the non "sixth form" colleges have leavers day at the end of the 2nd year as well, even though both colleges do AS and A2.

Thanks in advance.

I presumed, but don't know if this is right  that a sixth form college is one that is attached to the school and a college is a further education college that is totaly seperate with no connection to a school.
6th Form College:
-Just has 16-19s. Usually just does A-Levels, possibly BTECs, that kinda stuff.

College:
-Has 6th form in it, but also has courses for non-6th formers. In various things.

purple girl, ah thats the one. got it now, thanks.
well from experiences of my friend and myself id say first off:
Disiplin at sixth formcollege youd probably have slighlty more discipli, eacher will make youwork and you might not alloed to ome into school just for lessons but yourfree periods aswell. In my sixth form tha i went to we had to gonto school and do our free periodseven if they were in the mornings. Normal colleges may hae less disciplin and may consequently lead you tobe tardy, lat and may even create bad habits because ou have more freedo tere. Thats how i se the difference between then anyway..

College is much better. That's the difference.
6th form = part of a secondary school

college = FESI or Further Education Specialist Institute
6th form is like school again.

College gives you more freedom.

Not really. It's true that most sixth forms are associated with a secondary school, however some arn't.

The one that I'm going to is a sixth form college [St Dominics], but is not associated with any school.

I think purple-girl is right. I think the reason why they call St Dominics a sixth form college is because it only has 16-19s or something.

I think it depends on the individual institution tbh.

Well, my college was weird because, even though it's classed as a sixth-form, no-one calls it that. It's not directly attached to a school, although there are a few in the Midlands with the same name. We could do whatever we liked in our frees, wear what we liked, etc... so it wasn't that strict. I'm not sure what you mean by 'Leavers' Day', but - for example - we had a Year 13 photo this year and I don't know anybody at a college to have had one. Also, we had a Summer Ball (rather we were meant to, but it got cancelled)... again, at the colleges I know about, they didn't have one. So, there are a few differences... but they might not apply to every sixth-form/college.
A sixth form college isn't attached to a school and probably doesn't have the same discipline, eg staying on site in frees and wearing uniform, that a school sixth form might have. The only difference is the one purple-girl said; sixth form colleges are for 16-19 year olds and are mostly for A-levels with a few vocational courses, whereas other (FE) colleges are for students of all ages, may offer part time, evening or weekend classes and offer lots of vocational courses as well as A-levels.

Cool, i have a better idea now.

I don't know why everyone keeps saying sixth form colleges are more disciplined. I go to a sixth form and we can wear what we want and go offsite during our frees.

i think it's more of a generalisation tbh FNPH, which, in my experience, isn't unfounded!

My college had a leavers day - only 20 people bought tickets so it got cancelled :/ but yes. The premise was there! lol
do colleges have a prom? I no my 6th form does, does anyone elses 6th form have proms to?
