Can I get an overall 2:1 in my psychology degree with these exam results???

Hey, im studying psychology and have just got my 2nd year exam results. I did six modules that were 0.5 units and got 50%, 44%, 45%, 44%, 57% and 40% and did one module that was 1 unit and got 57%. I've heard so many different ways that your final mark is calculated, like if you get over 68% im most of your 2nd and 3rd year modules you'll get a 2:1 etc. i dont know what is true and would just like to know if it is possible for me to gain a 2:1 next year and how hard this will be.

Thanks!!!

I dont know how it works but my theory is all your grades were in the 2:2 category (I think) If you get higher marks next year it can pull it up? Im not sure if its just the average or what.
So actually im no help to you at all!

Classification of degrees for current Part II students
by Barry Rowlingson — last modified 2006-08-24 15:43
The following regulations apply to students who are in second- , third- and fourth- year, as of April 2004. The students who enter Part II in October 2004 will have a different scheme; see the 2004-5 year handbooks.
Degrees are awarded entirely on the basis of Part II studies. A mark is awarded for each of the Part II half-units taken by a student. There is a correspondence between marks and the various classes of degree; the class boundaries are as follows.

70+
first class honours 60-69
upper second class honours (2:1) 50-59
lower second class honours (2:2) 40-49
third class honours 35-39
pass 0-34
fail Three year degree schemesStudents have sixteen marks. For a given class of honours degree other than first, a student needs to satisfy the following:

At least half of the sixteen marks must lie in or above the class, and the average of the sixteen marks must be no more than 2.0% below the class boundary.

For a first class degree, a student must instead satisfy either of the following:

At least six of the sixteen marks must be first class and the average of the sixteen marks must be at least 68.0%; or

At least eight of the sixteen marks must be first class and the average of the best fourteen marks must be at least 68.0%.

At the other extreme, if a student has five or more failed half-units then an honours degree shall not normally be awarded; and if the average of the sixteen marks is less than 35% then not even a pass degree shall normally be awarded.

Four-year degree schemes (MSci)Students have twenty-eight marks. For a given class of honours degree, the average of the twenty-eight marks must be greater than or equal to the class boundary.

I can't believe I registered on here just to do this!

Ok, in order to obtain an overall 2:1 you need to get 8 marks at 60%+ (each full module is worth 2 marks and half modules are worth 1 mark) and the average of all of your marks put together must not fall below 58%.

Since you haven't got any marks over 60% this year you will need to get 60%+ in all of your modules next year, and I've worked out that your overall average for this year is around 50%.

You could get a 2:1 but you'll really need to get your head down, so good luck with it!
