Ah, I guess this confirms it then. Brazil is still a third world country.

All of this makes the issues at London 2012 look like a total non-entity.
Private companies don't seem to be having much luck with security - G4S cocked up in 2012 & if I remember correctly didn't do all that much better during the Commonwealth games in 2014.
Are they going to use the Brazilian armed forces to provide security along with the police force?

I'm not even going to try and keep up with all the stories coming from this fiasco of an event, there are simply too many, the mega thread is a good idea though. I just don't have to patience to contribute in a meaningful way.

What really makes me uncaring is that the Olympians aren't (largely) actually from the countries they are supposed to be representing. One of our long distance runners for example is from Africa, he was born in Africa, he trained in Africa, he lived in Africa for his whole life up until a few years ago when he came to Scotland for some sporting event and absconded, later showing up in London to claim asylum.

He came second in the London marathon recently and is now representing GB in the Rio Olympics...what god damn sense does that make ?

Well, he's clearly an extremely talented individual. If the state wishes to give him citizenship, and he wishes to perform for GB, why not?
I mean, you certainly have no issue with immigration of talented individuals, right?

I understand that he's not really "representing" GB as he's not even lived here. But as far as I know there is no international law against it and pretty much every single nation has used olympians and players with other nationalities.

Its actually a pretty standard Latin American country (off the top of my head, I can safely say that things are even worse in Venezuela, Mexico), and probably a pretty standard 'second world' country, only the hugely increased scrutiny has revealed the problems

Certainly not the police, they are already stretched very thin indeed
