Do you have to speak to someone in person to confirm it or is it just assumed you want to retake it when you return to uni in September and re register? and if you don't re register in September then obviously you don't retake the year?

Different unis have different rules for this so you need to ask someone at your uni. Contact someone in your department as soon as you can to confirm what you need to do, if anything. Admin staff often have the best knowledge of progression rules and will also be in the department over summer (and not off on research trips like academics!)

At my uni you cannot retake years that you have failed as you must resit in August to be able to continue to the next year, but you still have to tell someone via the uni portal that you intend to sit the exams.
