I'm fully aware that medicine is pretty much never available as a clearing choice, however, for the first time SGUL has said they will be putting their medical course in clearing. My question is do you think many others will do the same or is there some reason why St. George's haven't filled all their spaces?

I currently hold an offer at a different medical school and I was just curious.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think most universities will continue to use the waiting list as a means to fill spaces in their Medicine course (should any become available).

This is most likely because they like to have interviewed an individual before giving them an offer.

I guess it's just easier for them to work of a list rather than be bombarded by potential hopefuls who didn't even apply to their university prior to achieving their A level grades.

Most medical schools do not like going into clearing because they like to interview and personally select each person for their course, and being in clearing means that some people fall through into the medical school without an interview.

If you are not aware, most if not all medical schools have a waiting list, so if on results day many people do not meet their grade offer or there are lots of places remaining due to a lack of people firming then these people will be contacted and accepted if they match the grade requirements. This system is much better as it allows candidates who have been through the interview process and only narrowly rejected a place.

For me personally I think medical schools should stay out of clearing, getting into medical school is a long and hard process and I really do not think that places should be handed out on results day to everybody and their mum who happens to ring up in desperation, because trust me there are so many people out there without offers and are likely to get the grades, SGUL medicine is going to need some patience as I already know a couple of people ready to call up first thing on results day.
