A poor performance in 1 paper (40/80) can be compensated for, by achieving a higher grade (70/80) in the other paper. This will increase your average grade.
If ur question is regarding whether u can make up for lost marks, i.e if u loose 10 marks in paper 1, those 10 marks can not be regained with paper 2

It depends on the weighting, say they're 50% each,
Isay you get D in one A in another, the A will bring your overall grade up to a high C or lowB.
