I booked my student accommodation last month, and with that I signed a tenancy agreement and gave the student accommodation company a deposit of some sort which was £200.
They have now just emailed me telling me which room i will be staying in and with that they have told me that a "pre rental instalment of £300 needs to be paid before the end of August 2016...
So does this mean that i am basically paying £300 of rent in advance? Or will i have lost that money forever?

you pay part of your rent early, so it's not lost money you just need to pay it before you go and move in
