I recently completed access course in social science, and have a place for sociology this September. However I am now tempted to study history instead. Should I have completed a level in a history or access in humanities to be able to competently study history at undergraduate.

You won't be able to get on a History degree course without doing A-level or equivalent in History, Ancient History, Classical Civilization, etc.

I suggest you do the A-level rather than the access course.

Another option for you to is to see if there's any Foundation courses in History at uni. Though it's extremely rare, you may be in luck. Search on UCAS.

I did access to primary teaching then decided to apply for history instead. I'm about to start my 2nd year of a history degree, glad I changed my mind. I don't have any real relevant qualifications other than good GCSEs and an unrelated access course

Phone the History department at the uni where you have your Sociology place and ask if they would accept you.

Starting combined BA Hons degree in Scottish Culture and History that I accessed with an Access to Social Sciences NC, so it can be done. But it's not like its a "prestigious" Uni, though as a Social Scientist you know thats all BS anyway ;P
