Withdrawal from PGR course - reclamation of maintenance Watch

    Dear forum,

I'm a PhD student at one of the universities in England receiving a faculty scholarship. I'm currently considering withdrawing from the program and am concerned about the amount of fees I would have to pay back.

    My scholarship conditions say:
"The maintenance award will be paid quarterly in advance into your bank account"
"If you withdraw from this studentship, we will reclaim any overpayments of maintenance".

I wonder what the last condition actually means. If I leave, say, after the 2nd of 3 months of the aforementioned period for which I was paid in advance, should I pay back the fees for the whole 3 months or for the last remaining month only? Should I formally withdraw only by the end of the said 3-month period then?

    Thank you very much.

It would be better to withdraw at the end of the 3 month cycle before the next amount is paid in. The second bit basically means that if you've been paid for time you won't be spending on your work after withdrawing you have to pay that back.

Thank you for your reply! I understand what you mean, however, I'm more interested in whether this "overpaid" period will be calculated as a portion of the 3-month period that I wouldn't finish, or will it be just rounded off to the entire 3 months.

That'll depend on the uni. Email and ask.
