whats the go with looking at porn in your room on the college ethernet connection?

Well, I think there are people who monitor your internet access, as they only allow internet for academic purposes only. So I heard.

It depends on the college. My college is fairly strict about bandwidth usage, so if I used over 200MB a day for anything they'd probably look at what I'd been doing, and quite possibly send me an email warning me that if I kept doing it I'd get cut off. Friends have had their ethernet access barred for watching TV shows on youtube, for example. But at the same time, I suspect you'd be able to get away with looking at pictures without it being noticed, as long as you didn't look at 200MB a day's worth... But at lots of other colleges, internet use is a lot less restricted. So I'd say it depends on a) your college, and b) the type of porn you're watching.

Strictly speaking, not allowed. If you're caught, you're unlucky. People have been Deaned before for it, so college taking an interest in your browsing habits is not unheard of.

While I disagree with the whole "We monitor your life on the internet" I think it is quite beneficial that they want their students to be focusing on working rather than wasting time on Youtube.
While revising for exams I spent a lot of time on Youtube, and thus I could see myself doing that at Oxford as well. However, with punishment in the air I think I could reduce the spent to almost zero.

I'm worried now. Towards the end of last term I watched about 5 episodes of Jonathan Creek one night. Didn't realise they were 400MB each  . Haven't heard anything about it. Let's hope they didn't notice :p:

Yes, it seems to be bandwidth they're most concerned about, regardless of what you use it for. I got several of those warning emails during one term, and it took me ages to realise that it must have been due to my rather excessive EEBO-usage that term. (I was doing a paper that required me to look at lots of of texts through EEBO, because they weren't otherwise available to me).

I looked at your profile and saw you're at Worcester - I wouldn't worry if I were you! My boyfriend's at Worcester, and he's downloaded at least one entire film in the time I've known him, and the college hasn't spoken to him about it. If they didn't notice at the time, it's unlikely they'll randomly review your bandwidth usage now, anyway.

(Second year Maths at Worcester... has Adam introduced you to the Game yet?)

The guys on my floor download films/tv on a weekly/daily basis and have never been spoken to about it. One guy, who lives opposite me, was once spoken to about downloading music, but was just told to do it at night instead when the bandwidth wasn't in such demand. Do it at night and you should be fine.

What... I use the internet the most during the evening. People actually use them in the morning/afternoon?

Morning --> afternoon --> evening --> night?

Work or procrastinate in the morning/afternoons aided by the internet & do more exciting things in the evenings/night or sleep? Depends on your routine...

It varies from college to college. I know that some colleges will essentially admit to not caring, or having such ludicrously high bandwidth limits per week/day that they may as well not care. Certainly very few people ever actually get punished for downloading porn, either by colleges or by proctors.
From the 2007 Proctors' oration (http://www.ox.ac.uk/gazette/2006-7/supps/1_4802.pdf):

"Breach of Statute XI Code of Discipline

Misuse of Property (Information Technology facilities): 12 (5). The
Proctors imposed one fine of £20; two fines of £40; three
fines of £50; and one fine of £60; together with written
warnings as to future conduct. In two cases, the Court
of Summary Jurisdiction imposed fines of £120 and £90
respectively and ordered that the machine of one offender
should remain excluded from the University network
until certain conditions imposed by the Proctors were
met. In one case, the Court of Summary Jurisdiction
rusticated a student for the remainder of the term. The
Proctors’ Disciplinary Hearing imposed fines of £50 and
£35."

I spent most of my ethernet time watching The Simpsons and South Park, and college didn't seem to notice / care. Maybe it's because I'm a graduate though. We have certain privileges

No porn though.

Well, the reason the college asks for it to be like that is that the academic bandwidth is higher during the day. People use it for work during this time and they don't want it being slowed down by excessive social use. In the evenings people (tutors) aren't working so it's a free for all, more or less. Not that I've ever had bandwidth issues on the Oxford network.
I don't think they care at my college. People use limewire/youtube/alluc.org, and no doubt watch porn, all the time. No-one seems to care. On the down side, our internet is pretty unreliable, which I guess might be because of that.
There was also a piece in either Oxstu or the Cherwell, to do with something along the lines of how internet access wasn't monitored at all colleges, and how easy it was to look at porn. I know this, because somenoe I know does a lot of photography for them, and had great fun deciding how to set up a picture for that article...

That's good to hear. And it was through most of the night so not on "academic time". On the issue of porn: if you really want it and are worried about getting caught, just download it at home.

I'm not familiar with "the game". He spends most of his time with the medics so we rarely see him anyway
