Does anyone know if international students are treated 'fairly' in terms of finding a work placement?

well i know most jobs say you have to have the right to work in the UK, so you have to have the right visa or something, so if you have that, and you can speak the language fine, then yeh u shud be treated equally. i think more of the problem is whether ou can acually apply to the job due to visas (as your not a student you'll be working) or thats what i gathered at least

One of the girls I know from cheerleading is an international student from Malaysia, and she's currently out in industry in the UK (she was thinking she might go her year out at home if she didn't find anything here). I think as long as you've got the right visa's in place, there's no problem.

Ooh if you do cheerleading you probably know my flatmate, she's just joined there and raves about how awesome it is.

Anyway, back on topic. Looking for a placement has been a nightmare so far, they're all really far away and in IT, which I really don't want to work in. Dr Machin had some words for me but they really weren't encouraging at all :frown:

Im sure you will find something, keep looking. I only really put my mind to it after Christmas, and only sent out applications in January!

Like yourself, I didnt want to go into a techy IT side either, but dont worry, the department approved positions as long as they had "IT elements to it"...

I didn't get my placement until May, and there were still about 50 Business Schoolers looking, so you've got time.

Eh, I don't really want an IT element either. My position at this point is firmly: business school wins at life, computer science needs to be removed from the university so that they cannot torment me further.

Having said that though, apparently there are ways around the dreaded computing FYP (Because yes, Dr. Hussak absolutely cannot wait to be my supervisor, I spoke to him and he was so enthusiastic :P ) so maybe there are ways around this too, ways that involve precisely no computing element to my placement, haha.

you want get any placement pretty much that doesnt have some form of computer element! you just got to think to what extent. for instance i am doing a placement in marketing, but i use my computer all day every day pretty much, nothing in too much depth, but i do a lot on excel and some specialist programmes that we have for CRM and sales monitoring etc.

That's the kind of thing i'm after to be honest, except in HRM. I guess what I mean is i'd like to be treated as a Management and computing student instead of what I am which is a computing and management student stuck in the computer science department :frown: The management side of my course is awesome (Marketing comprises many elephants by the way, I bet you didn't know that) I want to use that as a big part of my placement.
I am working for an IT firm, and so far, its been in the finance department, and other than the "normal" Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc, the specialist applications I have had to use are the likes of SAP, Clearcase, and StarTeam. But my work mainly revolved around SAP at the moment, and the likes of MS Project, etc, is being introduced to me in the next few months...
this thread is old

This year it looks like it might be quite tricky getting a placement (especially as I do auto eng) - just had an email from Perkins Engines saying their placement scheme will not run this year because of the current economic climate.
Wonder how many other companies will do similar things?
Im sure you will be fine Benny, there are plenty more companies out there who I am sure could do with some resources...

Cross fingers! Although my mate text me earlier saying Xerox have 'rejected' him because they're closing their placement scheme for this year because of the economy. o ohh!

Yer, it's not the best of time to be trying to find work, unfortunately! All you can really do is crack on with getting applications/CVs out though... And maybe start looking at less 'mainstream' schemes and perhaps try more local companies who might appreciate some (relatively) cheap labour?
Xeror is quite popular with the Business/Computing departments from the signs that I got last year...quite a lot of position details got forwarded to us...
Gee you create threads that fail :frown:
