i sent a message to a teacher over Facebook to say thanks to the hard work and the belief he had in me and i was wondering whether that was okay to say your thanks via social media

Probably not. Send them a card, or thank them in person. It means so much more than a few sentences of e-letters.

I think OP meant whether she was allowed to send to message over social networks.

Of course she is allowed. There is no law against contacting anyone by social media. But it isn't appropriate. There are formal ways of communicating with teachers and social media isn't one of those.

I mean if it's permitted by the school.

I would be exceedingly surprised if school encouraged teachers and students to communicate via private social media. Just send an email, or a letter to reception and get them to forward it. Or better still, pop in in person.

no it won't be 'allowed'... I wouldn't do this as it puts your teacher in an awkward position in terms of do they ignore you/reply telling you not to contact them when what they WANT is to be able to say something friendly... they also might feel they have to report it to the school to cover themselves etc

In future, talk to someone in person or send a card
