    I think they just want the 'S' series and the note series to have the same number. It lines up better S7 and Note 7

    It is indeed. But I think it's technically the 8th note if you count in the Note edge and Note 3 Neo. But yeah it is very confusing

    They skipped the Note 6 so that the Note range would be in line with the S range. Otherwise it confused people because one device seems to be ahead all the time.

    Keeping in mind non-tech people will be wondering where the Note 5 went as well since it never had a UK release.

    The entire idea behind it is to simply branding. Because as you've said it's a little confusing right now.
