I've moved this to the University life forum where it is more likely to get an answer.

Unfortunately the numbers of care leavers at university is very small so it's possible that noone will be able to answer based on personal experience. You can always contact universities directly and ask them what support they offer for care leavers.

I'm not a care leaver but as far as I know there isn't any special support from universities as far as finances. A lot of universities have accommodation available over the summer as well (especially once you finish first year and can rent a house/flat which are usually 12 months). Universities also have hardship funds if you run out of money and can't afford to eat etc, I'd imagine as a care leaver you would be a priority in terms of getting this money but it's still not guaranteed and I don't know they would help you during the summer. You should be well placed to find work if you're in the same place all year though. As far as pastoral support most universities will offer you a personal tutor and have access to counselling/support services if you need them.

I would second the suggestion to choose some universities you like the look of and email them asking them about the sorts of things that you need to know.

Quite a number of universities offer specific bursaries for care leavers (eg https://www.southampton.ac.uk/school...e-leavers.page or http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/undergra...e-leavers.aspx and http://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-stu.../about-us/care )

The last mentions the Buttle UK quality mark which might help identify good options - http://www.buttleuk.org/areas-of-foc...e-quality-mark

We are actively seeking to encourage care leavers to apply to Oxford and can provide guidance pre-admission and on-course support. we would be happy to respond to either posts on this forum, PMs, or direct emails [email protected]
