3. are we allowed kettles in our rooms?
4. how much storage space is there for boxes etc
5. how good are the laundry facilities?
6. when do you get book lists?
7. how much (on average) do u spend each week?(budget)
8. is food going missing a big problem?
9. is general kitchen items goin missing a problem,
10. what other items are provided in kitchen#?ironing board?
11. is it a good idea to take a tv?
12. how much does it cost on average to join clubs and societies ?

1) yes you are meant to clean Kitchens and Bathrooms.

2)there are no rules, you may get lucky, like a friend of mine, and get a compulsuve cleaner who will do it all for you, some have a rota. Personaly i just clean up the mess i make and expect others to do the same.

3) You are not allowed a kettle technically but my friend did have one all year and it never set off the alarm, which is the reason they ban them in rooms.

4) storage depends totaly on your room so i cannot tell you without knowing your hall :P

5) The laundry on the seefount on in the Welsh halls are find so i would assume that they are the same everywhere else as well. You will have 4 washers and 4 dryers in each room.

6)Most book lists are already online you just have to look for them on the aber site, but the official one i do not think you will get that untill you are at aber and have access to either the blackboard program (this is for InterPol, i cannot speak for other deptments) what course are you doing i am sure there willbe someone on here who does it and can tell you.

7) i spend about 40-50 a week (after accomidation) but i am unusual in that i am totaly teetotal and never drink so i am not a good person to compare yourself to if you do lol.

8)food going missing will depend on your flat mates, i never had a problem with it personaly nother was ever took but i only had 4 in my flat, a friend who was in Penbryn was driven mad by it so he whiped some food on a dirty floor and laughed as people slowly stole it.

9)Similar to above but less likly food is more likly to be stolen i would tihnk, but never happened to me, though sometimes people would use my stuff but they would clean it and i would get it back, they never took it.

10) there is an Ironing board, though not a great one, and Iron, though the one we got was useless so i used another one. But you will need pots and pands, plates and all sorts of things like that.

11) You can watch almost all TV on the internet if you want to now, but if you want a tv bring it but signal can be a problem on the seafront.

12) the cost is about £3-4 i think, well that is what i will be charging for Model United Nations when i am taking the money for that Soc, and that is what most people charged me last year.

I hope that helps.

Jolly good, glad to see someone made a Q&A topic for us freshers.

I've got a question, do the halls have tv aerial connections in the room or do you have to have one of those indoor aerial things?
Reply 3
You'll need your own TV aerial (don't forget a TV license too), as there isn't one in rooms. Signal can be a bit dodgy depending on where you are.

In response to the cost of joining clubs/societies, it's usually only a couple of quid, plus you will need to get a Sporty Card or BOS card on top of that. I don't know how much a Sporty card is, as I got a 3 year on back in first year, but a BOS card is again only a couple of quid. These provide you with insurance for the activities and go towards running costs like minibuses etc.

1.

Yes. You'll get cleaning inspections twice a term [the second one of term your room will be checked too], and if it is not up to standard, a charge will be taken from your deposit.

2.

Depends on the people in your house. Sort this out when you arrive, but generally, people share the cleaning products and just clean as they go. Mops and hoovers are provided already

3.

Officially not, but you'll be fine as long as the steam doesn't set off your smoke detector

4.

What do you mean here? There's plenty of storage space for all your stuff, and I just had my suitcases and boxes etc in a corner of my room or above the wardrobe.

5.

OK. They were renewed this year and a LOT LOT better than they used to be! Quite expensive though, £1.60/1.80 for a wash, and £1 for a dry. It gets your clothes nice and clean though. Laundries are located throughout campus and town and vary in size, the one in PJM has 12 washers and 12 dryers [but I normally use 2 at a time to get all my stuff done in one go]

6.

Check with your department. When you know what modules you are registered for [which won't be untill you register in freshers week], each module has it's own page online with reading lists

7.

I normally spend a good £60-70 a week , £30 on food, a good £20-30 on going out, as well as other things, sometimes it tops £100 a week, especially at the beginning of term when getting books and things

8.

If you have considerate flatmates it's fine. Last year we knew who's food was whatr because we just stuck to specific shelves in the fridge/freezer, and you'll have your own food cupboard in the kitchen.

9.

Not really no. A bigger problem tends to be people using your stuff and not washing it up after!

10.

Ironing board, microwave, toaster, kettle, cooker, etc. All the basics really, but if you want a smoothie maker or a George Foreman grill, you'll need you're own!

11.

Depends if you watch a lot of TV. Bearing in mind though you'll need a TV licence, but to be honest most people get by by not having a TV. There is always something to do!

12.

It depends. Once you have your Sporty card and your BOS card, socs will tend to cost around £3-5 to join [I think they have to be £3 minimum]

In our Seafront hall there was a connection to a tv arial that was on the roof, however it was only in the kitchen. But i do not know about other halls and my halling having that may just be because my hall used to be someones house back in the deep and dark mists of time and was not build for students at first.

1. if living in self catered flats are we expected to clean ourkitchens and bathroom? We got ours 'cleaned' in catered, not that the cleaner usually did anything that roughly resembled cleaning...
2. if so, is there a specific rule e.g everyone gives money for cleaning stuff, buy your own? or a rota>? I'm looking forward to seeing what happens this year now we're in S-C private accom., probably not alot, just sort it out with your flatmates in the first few days!
3. are we allowed kettles in our rooms? no, but it's ok as long as they don't see them during inspections and you stop the steam setting off the ultra-sensitive smoke detectors.
4. how much storage space is there for boxes etc no idea, was plenty in Penbryn, except wardrobes are fairly small.
5. how good are the laundry facilities? More than adequate in Penbryn, machines seemed pretty new, haven't been messed up too much yet! Although someone did do there best to destroy the laundry room in the last couple of days!
6. when do you get book lists? Got mine in September in the first lectures.
7. how much (on average) do u spend each week?(budget) no idea(!) maybe £70ish as everyone else said - £25-60 going out (budget more for freshers, end of term weeks, birthdays and friend visits), £10 on food?
8. is food going missing a big problem? yes. but we were pretty sure who was responsible and being in catered accom. no one really had that much food anyway...
9. is general kitchen items goin missing a problem, as in appliances? no.
10. what other items are provided in kitchen#?ironing board? lol, we had 2, both useless, not that I ever used them
11. is it a good idea to take a tv? Personally don't think it's worth £130 odd for TV licences - i've just watched tv episodes off the internet if I was particularly bored.
12. how much does it cost on average to join clubs and societies ? Not much(?) - the one thing I regret was not joining a couple of societies - I was doing so much on the people from my floor in the first week never got round to it, it would have been nice to meet more different people, might be worth joining a society for your course (if there is one, I know there's one for Geography...)

That'll be me, the flatmates I get will be really lucky, I have mild OCD and have even been known to do other peoples' washing up when I stay the night in my friends' halls (in a drunken state)

But to answer the question I have friends with flatmates who do rotas, and some who dont even talk to each other and don't get on. Just depends on who you get I suppose.
I have to agree with dan_man that it is nice for us freshers to have a questions thread. Here goes: can I get most of the house stuff I'll need in Aber? I can't really drag pots and pans along so I'll need to get most of my stuff there. Is it well-equipped in that respect?

(presumming you mean saucepans, plates etc?) You'll be able to get all the kitchen stuff you need for Argos/Matalan/Currys (If you need anything electrical) etc. It won't cost you too much either, if you buy the cheaper things

Don't forget charlies. I love that place i've made like a million costumes from that shop.
Reply 12
Charlies is an absolute gem, but yes, get your kitchen stuff from Matalan/Charlies/Argos/Morrisons [yes Morrisons do sell kitchen stuff], and get your electrical stuff from Argos or Comet, or if you're lazy, online :p:
Where is the Argos in aber?
Reply 14
its next to the train station and iceland/lidl/qs complex thing...........was down in Aber the other day so hopefully i remembered right ...if anyone can hopefully back me up lol? is it an argos extra?
Reply 15
lol, yeah that's where it is and no it's not an Extra. You find alot of the stuff from the normal catalouge isn't in stock either! You just have to order it and go back a couple of days later.
Reply 16
