    Okay when I boot up I get a black screen like this:

    Please select the operating system to start:

    Microsoft Windows XP Professional
    Windows (default)
    If I don't press anything within 5 secs it chooses Windows (default) and then gives me an error message saying Windows could not start ... something ... Cannot Find \TMP\System32\hal.dll
    NB: My windows is installed to C:\TMP\

    If I choose the first option, everything works fine.

    Can I just replace hal.dll with a copy from someone else's system? What do I edit my boot.ini file to make it so this screen doesn't come up, and instead the system just boots using the option that works ("Microsoft Windows XP Professional")

    Here is my boot.ini file:
    [Boot Loader]
    Timeout=5
    Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)p artition(1)\TMP="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
    [Operating Systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition (1)\TMP="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
    Thanks!

    Do a repair installation of windows from your CD, it will replace all critical system files.
    You can delete the bottom entry in your boot.ini, it just points to the same location but without the default declaration, and the incorrect space in Microsoft.

    The bottom one? You sure you don't mean top? BTW that space was a typo, it doesn't really have it.

    Compare yours to another XP systems and make it look the same, but with your somewhat unusual installation directory.

    I dont have access to one right now to check for you.
