The Language-Based Extended Essay

Hello everyone,

I have come to realize that there are many threads that talk about the Extended Essay.. Unlike the others, this is one dedicated for language-based EEs. If you're doing yours in Language A1, A2 or B, you are more than welcome to discuss anything related to the EE on this thread.

Previous threads that talk about extended essays:

Geography EE
Psychology EE
ITGS EE
Economics EE and
Some EE enquiries

Have a nice day everyone..

For starters, roll over to find the EE Guide. It's a rapidshare link since the file is larger than the attachment size.

Insert the password: mmsibsyllabi to unlock the file.

Enjoy and have a wonderful day!!
2bh i think seperate is better, otherwise it just gets confusing, to talk someone trhough an EE thing, ie convince them what they're doing isn't quite what they should be to optimise their marks is painfully slow process that takes a bit of discussion, not good for one big thread, although the EE titles thread is a good idea.

Hello everyone,

I just realized that this thread has been down for about 3 weeks, so it's time to revive it! The thought of having an EE thread for all subjects might not have been such a good idea afterall, so this is a thread dedicated to the Language-based EE. If you're doing yours in Language A1, A2 or B, then this is the right place to ask questions, post any requests or suggestions.

My English EE is due in about 6 months, but my rough draft is about to due soon.

I'm doing my EE on A1, I was thinking of doing Shakespeare's books since they interest me a lot. I was thinking of doing a comparative study of some his plays (Lear, RIII or Hamlet) and discusss Shakespeare's designs of machiavellian traits. Namely, Edmund (Lear) and Richard III (RIII). My original plan was to compare Shakespeare's text to a modern book but had no luck in doing so.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Thanks.

Well first of all, the best thing is to jot down any points you find common among the three plays you want to tackle. Assess the characters, language, themes, setting, plot and all these things to get a clear broad picture. Then, you can narrow down your topic. The machiavellian traits.. What about them? Relate them to the three plays. This way, you have it narrowed down. Choose something (from the list you did) that you can easily tackle and easily analyze. Just try it first, and then post to see how you've progressed.

Have a nice day everyone.

I'm doing mine in A2 English HL and man do I sometimes regret it. How do you actually evaluate a literary work? O_o I keep feel as if my essay is too descriptive than analytical...

It's on the homosexual identity and the factors that influence it in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson.

No one here happens to have any English Lit EE samples btw? I would love to see some to compare structure and such.

Well I have one English A1 EE, not sure if you'd need that for an A2 EE. If you want it, I could PM it to you if you like.

Check your PM then!! Oh, and I just noticed the error in the first link given there, you just need to register and at least have one post. If you don't want to, then tell me and I'll send it to you once again instead of giving you the link.

Is it possible if you send me a copy of the English A2 essay?

I would like to check the general format, thanks.

I've just did some research and sort of formulated my topic.

"The portrayals of Machiavellian characters in Shakespeare's plays "King Lear", "Richard III" and "Hamlet" and how it depicts the theme appearance vs. reality"

I'm planning to do an analysis on Edmund from Lear, Richard III from RIII and Claudius from Hamlet, perferably one analysis on one speech from each of them and compare and contrasts.

Any advice/tips/recommendations/help is appreciated in advance.
I finished and handed in my EE a few months ago. It wasn't a language based essay, I just wanted to say that and gloat at everyone else working on their essays

Haha don't take that too seriously...I do A1 english though, nearly done with my second year in IB and if someone has a few issues with their essays and it's in my capacity to help them, I'd be glad to.

omg. my essay totally sucks. I just read the abstract and some parts of HMS's essay but it was amazing! Wow. I was sort of satisfied with my essay, but now I just want to toss it out the window and tear it to pieces:p: gosh.

I bow to you HMSchocolate. You are officially my idol.

I feel your pain, dear. Are you doing it in A1 or A2 btw?

Sighhhhhh...My first draft deadline is on wednesday and im debating whether to change my topic in a way that will make it focus on only one of my arguments instead of all four of the chosen one before since the first one has already taken 1000 words and im far from finishing that argument.....

Thanks for the advices, just another quick question.
I've often heard that examiners don't like overdone works, so is my essay on Shakespeare's works too cliched?? =S

Hehe thanks. I was rereading my EE the other day and I realised it would had been a much better essay if I was able to write it after the release of HP7. There's all sort of things I could talk about with HP7 but then I may have trouble with word limit then...ah...

Bold: That's right. I was planning to do Pride and Prejudice before the Head of Language in my school (who wasn't my supervisor) told me that I really shouldn't if I wanted more than a C.

I suppose even with Shakespeare it depends on the play. Not sure how cliched King Lear and RIII are considered but I suppose they're slightly better than if you did Macbeth or something.
