Best of luck, Trotsky! I'm sure that they'll put you somewhere where you'll be happy if you don't get Lupton, but I hope that you get your first choice!

I put Lupton as my first choice, but my offer is conditional, so don't know if I'm going there yet!

Hi Trotsky,
I have read your profile and some previous posts of you,
I have to say you look like a person with whom I could talk about politics and music maybe! And the icons on your signature are fantastic, where the hell have you found them?

I hope you got allocated in Lupton, I did choose North Hill Court as first choice (it was the cheapest) but they placed me in Lupton. Anyway, by checking out forums I have seen it is not so bad, people say that Lupton has bigger kitchens and rooms, and bathrooms are wonderful... refurbished and hot showers!

Anyway the rent costs are way too different from the money I am expected to pay in my small town here (here you can get a decent room in flat with about £130-160 per month, £30-40 per week!), but I am working really hard this summer, this month I have been on call every evening (I work as a projectionist in villages and town squares, we call it "open air" cinema, from 6pm till midnight and a half). In addition to this I am working at university here as a kind of "student advisor". I am beginning to feel a little tired, but every objective needs a sacrifice, isn't it?

Bye to you all,
Tommaso.

The emoticons are from TSR, just click "More" when you're making a post and you can see them all. I just chose a few that describe me quite well.

You're right Tommaso, Lupton is slightly more expensive but the rooms are nice, and the kitchen is bigger than in North Hill Court, and has a table where everybody can sit. Also, North Hill Court is quite far from anything - it's a shorter walk to the uni but there isn't much nearby in terms of bars and shops. Lupton however, is in Headingley so there are a few cinemas (which I see from your profile you will like), lots of bars and shops etc. and there is a road straight down to the uni, so you can have a longish walk or take a bus or bike.

You say you like rock music, what bands do you like?

Well, I generally listen to everything that someone might propose to me, but I have some favorite rock bands (and also not-strictly-rock) that I prefer. If we want to begin from the most famous ones, I could mention:
- Pink Floyd (I have the entire discography)
- Led Zeppelin
- Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler solo work
- R.E.M.
- Radiohead
- recently I started discovering Blur (they vary a lot, from pop to slow ballads and commercial rock, but they are nice)

But usually the bands I like the most are the ones "not-so-commercial"/"not-so-famous", I mean, the indie/underground scene, I do not know if I am using the right words actually since I am not a native speaker and not so practical in speaking about music genres, anyway I listen often to: Mogwai (Scottish, they're so powerful), Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes, Sigur Ros (from Iceland), Sonic Youth, Red House Painters (from California, their music means a lot for me and recalls me a period of my life)...

In the Not-very-rock-but-more-acoustic/folk area I love: Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, Damien Rice, Van Morrison and some italian songwriters probably unknown to you (but if you know something about them that's great): Francesco Guccini, Fabrizio de Andrè and Francesco de Gregori.

I would like to begin listen to some blues.
What I DON'T listen to (that sometimes is more important to what you are actually listening to) is: dance music, techno and stuff...

I like a little bit the Waterboys (even if it is completely other genre, more 80ish and pop, but the albums Fisherman's Blues and Room to Roam are little masterpieces).

Here's my music profile!
Hope it matches!

About North Hill Court and Lupton... well, I realised it... I am becoming practical about the area by using internet and Google maps! I already know the road, and I am going to get a good bike as soon as I arrive, since I want to ride to uni, and want to ride in the dales!

Bye
Tommaso.

No I didn't, but I knew Pink Floyd performed at the Refectory!
I went to Mark's concert four years ago, in the main town square of my small town... our local summer events promoters managed to get him, and it has been a big big event for my small, remote and forgotten county!

Unfortunately I cannot go to many concerts... most bands play in Milan or Rome, and I cannot afford it... too much train + ticket expense! And there is no chance I can listen to alternative rock and indie bands here... sigh!

Currently I am listening to Mogwai...
and what's more I am spreading those bands because of my work: when I set up screen, speakers, projector and everything (that happens at around 8.30pm) in the town where I am working, I plug my iPod onto the projector's mixer to make everybody listen to Mogwai, or Franz Ferdinand...
I love spreading to people those unfortunately almost unknown bands...

I hope you can suggest me more and more music to listen to!

Bye
Tommaso.

If you've been allocated to Lupton, there is now an official Leeds Uni facebook group for it. It's a chance to get to know your future flat mates, ask any questions about the accommodation and find out exactly what's going to be going on in your halls.

Not sure I have any, but it's a firly good size with a big mirror, lights and 2 sinks. The toilet is in a cubicle off this and the shower is in a seperate cubicle (the showers are possibly the best showers in the world, nice and warm in the cubicle and they are really powerful). The bathroom is essentially big wnough for the entire flat to be in it. All pretty decent and modern, absolutely nothing to worry about.

I got accepted by Lupton as well, should be in Block O...

To Tommaso: I live in Castelfranco, near Treviso. I'm glad to hear that I will find some Italians in Leeds! Ho prenotato un volo per l'8 settembre, in modo da poter partecipare alla Welcome Week, e spero di trovare una sistemazione temporanea a Lupton prima dell'inizio del contratto. Frequenti l'università di Udine?

Hey everyone,
I don't know about you guys but i've heard a lot of bad things about lupton.
I went there a little while ago and admittedly the corridors, bathroom and kitchen are very cramped but it's all about what you make of it.
I'm gonna be in the B-block and having the time of my life regardless of the appearance of lupton or the distance..all i hope is that i'm with some wicked people. Cramped kitchen party anyone??
Go B-block!

The bad stories about Lupton come from the fact that it used to have some refurbished and unrefurbished blocks, and if you were in the unrefurbished blocks then you were unlucky because they were crap. Year by year they refurbished them and now there are no unrefurbished blocks any more which means that value-for-money wise Lupton is about the best residence in Leeds. The location is fantastic, right in the heart of Headingley's social scene with the supermarket round the back of the residence. The bus stop into uni is just down the road as well. Superb place to live in first year.

Reply 33

Yeh. When i went to check out my room the kitchen was still being refurbished and from the looks of it the unrefurbished wasn't so nice. Also there are some wicked parks around Headingley and the infamous 13-pub crawl!

Woo! Got into Lupton too, which is where I applied. Did look at North Hill, but saw that there were only 80 places and decided against it
