Starting with a popular quote is quite a clichéd way of starting your personal statement. Generally it is something the admissions tutor is already aware of and has seen hundreds of times. An unusual quote, with discussion, is sometimes used well but ultimately there is no point putting it in without discussion that tells them something about you.*

    Short answer: no

    Long answer: NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Admissions staff want to hear from you - it's a personal statement not a "quote someone else's words" statement

I started mine off with a joke, much to the chagrin of my school. Worked though.

No. That was the first thing we were told not to do when given advice about personal statements in school

Hah, I did that. I quoted a famous mathematician because I was applying for maths, and towards the end of the statement I linked everything I've said about myself to the quote. Not like it matters though. I got into my firm and it's not like maths personal statements are even read.
