Can someone explain to me the reformation of AS and A2? AS Level serves no purpose?

From EDEXCEL's website
http://qualifications.pearson.com/en/qualifications/edexcel-a-levels/reforms.html

It states that AS Levels are a standalone qualifications and they do not contribute to the end grade of A-Levels. Of course, this only applies to certain subjects as of now such as Business, Chemistry, Physics, etc.

It undergoes three phases and currently we are in the first phase which started at September 2015 and will end at September 2017.

So in English, the grades you get in AS doesn't mean anything at all.
So what exactly was the purpose of AS?!?! To simply get us ready for the ACTUAL exam?

Please be aware that this is under EDEXCEL's exam board.

Yes to act as a mock and prepare you better for the real thing
Stand alone ASs are not unique to Edexcel. They help inform predictions and give Universities an idea of ability.

Ah, okay. So Chemistry and Physics is out of the question for me, however since maths isn't on the first phase, I'll just retake Maths and the module I did worst, which is probably C1. Thanks.
