So I got horrible AS results, which were quite a bit unexpected... I got
    B - History
    D - Physics
    D - Maths
    E - Biology
I'm intending on dropping History but now I'm kinda reconsidering. I really want to do Engineering (specifically Bioengineering).
I already know I'm going to take a gap year. But I really want to have an A*AB result or at least an ABB for A2.
Is it possible for me to improve that much? This is with new spec, so the AS results don't count except for maths. I'm willing to work 40 hours or maybe a bit more a week. Would that help?
Should I just retake an entire year? I really want to get into a good university.

As you said it doesn't count so yes you can get any grade you want. The issue might be getting offers from unis that want AAA etc. but figure out what went wrong this year and work on that next year.

What do you think went wrong this year?

    C1 - 68
    C2 - 56
    M1 - 48
    Overall 172
Never did that badly before... Especcially not in M1.

@LPauling As for what went wrong this year... It's hard to tell. Rather than one big issue like lack of revision, I think it's a lot of small stuff that made it lack of quality revision. I spend time revising, but I ended up burning myself out because I tried revising stuff I didn't understand for example.

Well there then you can see your problem keep asking your teacher in class if you don't understand something so you don't have to waste time during revision trying to understand

I'm thinking about retaking year 12 so that I can make sure I get A's and A*'s in A2. Is that a good idea?

If you are under EDEXCEL exam board, your Year 12 subjects like History, Physics and Biology will not contribute to your overall A-Level grade. Maths not included (starts new spec in September 2017).

You just have to pass these new spec subjects just to get in A2. (which you did)
