Manchester Alternative Prospectus

Found this alternative prospectus which I've never come across before, despite the fact that I'm hopefully going to Manc in September. It's really useful and interesting seeing as it is honest and written by students. Anyone thinking of going to UoM should give it a looksy!

Yeah I wondered why they put down Wichmond park that badly... probably the wrong person writing the article. But as it says, who cares about your flatmates, you´re in the middle of fallowfield in the end!

yeh but it descrobed the place as pretty quiet and uneventful in comparason to somewhere like oak house!

Yeah but didn't it say that you have to scrape the black mould out of the showers in Oak House? Richmond Park looks really good quality, I wouldn't worry about it. Way out of my price league though!!!

prefer worse accomodation though for better social. Not that bad to have a smaller room/no en suite, especially with money saved!
where you staying?

Both Daveo and Tednol were in Richmond Park (and Daveos staying there a second year) and they say pretty much the opposite of what that geezer says in the alt prospectus - although ill admit it was a it of a worrying read  pm one of them if you're worried

Grosvenor Street Building, looks ok and it's cheap. I wanted somewhere close to the town and on the campus, saves money on buses etc and is more convient. I did consider Oak House though. Is that where you're staying?

I can say from my expierience that your time in Richmond park will be what you make it, perhaps somewhere like oak house is more social however RP is by no means not social, it depends on the effort you put in and the facilities in RP are second to none, hence me wanting to live there in my second year! If you have any more questions i'll be happy to try and help.

I found this link to Tednols blog which may help give a better image of life at RP, it sort of shows it in a differnt light to the alternative prospectus....hope he doesnt mind me posting it....

Don't regret Richmond Park. I'll be really very shocked if you have anything other than an awesome year there - everyone in my flat did. Comparing Richmond Park to Owen's Park or Oak House is unfair, here's why.

I think Richmond Park is sometimes called quiet, un-sociable etc is because unlike say Owen's Park, or Oak House, most socialising is done outside of the halls. Most RP residents will, if they are after a quieter night, not stay in Richmond Park but will instead head for OP's, the Squirrel Bar (belonging to Oak House). These are far, far bigger bars (belonging to far larger halls) than Richmond Park bar (called Arpys).

So maybe on a typical night, standing in the middle of Richmond Park will be a lot quieter than standing in the middle of Owen's Park. But so what? Most of the people who live in Richmond Park will be the same people partying as hard as anybody in OPs etc.

Personally, I think we get the best of both worlds. You can have a banging night on your doorstep, and then head home for bed knowing you can actually get some sleep. Not just that... you can get up in the morning feeling like shit and get straight in your OWN shower. And you aren't going to find presents in the bathroom deposited by your drunken next door neighbours cos you have a spanking en suite.
