Health - In 10 years...

a third of the population of Britain could be dead due to infectious diseases.

Im doing a tasting medicine course at King's College London, and yesterday I had a talk by a doctor specialising in Infectious Diseases.
Having been educated on this issue, I feel it is my duty to educate others too, as this is very important.

He said that antibiotics are failing, infectious diseases are becoming more resistant, and more are creeping back. The infectious diseases range from the Plague to Bird Flu - and doctors anticipate a large epidemic soon, and it could be one of 7 killer diseases, for which not many medicines are availlable, let alone enough for the whole population.

At the end of the talk he practically begged us to specialize in his field, in his own words "we need you!"

This is a depressing subject isn't it? I agree, and after coming out of that talk I knew three things.

1. I did not want to specialize in that field!
2. The problems and implications are overwhelming
3. Good for us - we only have to do very very small easy things to help! That's ALL

And those small things are written down here. Countries have eradicated infectious diseases by enforcing these techniques. Please do them, they are so easy but so so important! You don't believe how many times we have been told to do these things by the school of medicine. Yes - now we all are health freaks

1. HAND WASHING
This alone eradicated infectious diseases from a country (yes i have forgotten which one im sorry)
Please wash your hands properly (see a medical website for the official hand washing guide! there are 6 easy steps) after these things:
-pets
-public transport
-toilet
-before and after cooking/eating

and these places habour bacteria (yes i did do a poster on it today...:frown: )
-jewellry
-light switches
-bathroom and kitchen faucets
-microwaves
-door handles
-toilet handles
-computer keyboards
-phones
-artificial nails

2. NO SPITTING
bacteria can live in spit for a very very long time and it does transmit disease.

3. COVER YOUR MOUTH WHEN YOU SNEEZE OR USE A TISSUE
you sneeze at 100 something and hour...miles maybe? it was absurdly fast anyway. worst way of transmitting disease.

scary facts
1. the kitchen harbours more bacteria than public toilets
2. the chopping board harbours more bacteria than your loo
----any hints? yes -clean the kitchen regularly!
3. you can reduce your chances of getting a cold by 46% if you wash your hands (WITH SOAP! WASHING WITH WATER HELPS BY 0%) after you use public transport

some people feel "oh the problems are too big, I can't stop us all dying of infectious diseases, i'll just not do anything then" - please don't! you just have to do these 3 things up there, which are SO EASY -and you will seriously be contributing to a much healthier future.

thank you very much

synopsis: coughs and sneezes spread diseases. wash hands.

thanks, but i think everyone over the age 2 knows all this :p:

yes of course they know it, but do they do it? not even the nurses at hospitals wash their hands enough. The doctor highlighted that infectious diseases are such a dangerous problem now, and I guess that not everyone is as higenic (cant spell) as they would like to think - if not we would not have those stats about the kitchen being dirtier than public toilets! so yeah -please do this guys. if we all did this, infectious diseases would not be a problem in this country.fact.

1. the kitchen harbours more bacteria than public toilets

Is not equivalent to:

*Stargirl*

the kitchen being dirtier than public toilets!

What you haven't specified is whether the bacteria is harmful or not, which is slightly important to the point your trying to make.

Errr who cares? Washing your hands ain't going to make much difference. If it comes it comes, it's called evolution. Try not to think you or the human race have any importance in anything and you'll be much more carefree.

Anyone with half a brain should care.

lol. Deaths from infectious diseases has nothing to do with evolution.

Telling someone to be more carefree is easy to say, just you wait for your friends, or your children get seriously sick (or die) when it could have been prevented if the population washed their hands.

That's how most bacteria is spread, it doesn't just magically fly through the air

I'm surprised "don't take antibiotics unless you really have to" isn't on the list.

If people follow this advice too much people in 10 years people will still be screwed because we'll have crap immune systems. We need a certain level of exposure to these things to build up an immunity against them. Seriously, your post just seems to be encouraging OCD like obsession.

Well actually - poor immune system --> more likely to not survive disease and pass on your bad immune system genes. I rather believe that is called evolution.

yes of course the bacteria are harmful - they cause disease.

"washing your hands aint gunna make a difference" - ignorance ok. I have just spent a page telling you, what a scientist told me, about the important of washing your hands! it eradicated infectious diseases! so dont give me this ok. accept it, yes it is important!

for goodness sake people, ive heard this from the experts and now im telling you. please learn this and accept this. the whole school of medicine won't shut up about the importance of hand washing.

this is not obession, i am telling you what I learnt at Kings College London, School of Medicine, from an infectious disease specialist, yesterday.

washing your hands will simply stop infectious diseases from killing people in this country.

you all know that increase in higiene (cant spell) eradticated cholera etc in the first place yes??

so please just wash hands and keep kitchens clean! very simple, very effective.

oh and by the way - we were told that there are not enough medications for the Bird Flu strain, and the medications are based on a different strain anyway, so if it strikes, which they predict it will, they do not know if it will even be effective, and there will deffinately not be enough to go round. i think people can work out the consequences. Bird Flu is one of 7 infectious diseases that could strike, and ive alreayd told you that medication is not availlable or not working for all of these diseases. so this is a case of preventing because curing is not going to work too well.

i don't want to be mean to you guys, but you can go to Kings College yourself and enquire if you want to - i was just as clueless about these things until i was given that talk. We cannot ignore the fact that infectious diseases are on the rise - that would be ignorant and dangerous. and these techiques of keeping them at bay are so so simple!

Coming from a BSc (biology) graduate I believe that there is truth to both your arguements.

However in this day and age I'm more inclined to take Saffie's stance on this topic :p:

No one's saying you shouldn't wash your hands and keep your kitchen clean, but there's no need to be obsessive about it. It's not going to cause the destruction of humanity if a few people forget to wash their hands once in a while. It just seems like you are blowing it way out of proportion.

You were told something by a scientist who is after funding...

Motherofgod must be true. Bacteria actually breed faster on clean skin as there is less competition.
