Missed offer on results day?

Hope I'm posting this in the right place; mods, feel free to move it!

Basically, I have an offer from UEA for their English & American Literature course and I really don't think I'm going to get the grades they're asking for (ABB with the A in English Literature)

I know that on Results Day if you've missed your offer, you can ring up & beg / plead etc. for them to still let you in. It's stupid but I have a bit of a phobia of talking on the phone to people I don't know & I'm anticipating that on Results Day if I've missed my grades I'll be quite upset. SoI was wondering, will I have to ring them up myself or will a teacher/Head of Sixth Form do it?

Thanks for any info.
I don't mean to offend here, but having a teacher or head of sixth form ring up might seem a bit... pathetic. True, the places in Clearing aren't exactly looking for people desperate to get into their university, but I think it's at least polite to ring up yourself. If nothing else, it shows them that you're at least vaguely interested, and not that your teacher feels sorry for you and is ringing up for you.

Besides, if I'm completely wrong and your teachers are prepared to ring up for you, then loads of other people will be getting them to too.

If I miss my offer for Management with French at Nottingham, ABB (B in French) then I MUST call them MYSELF if I want to plead. They said, on their open day, in the presentation, that if we get a teacher, or even worse a parent, to call them, then we will be automatically on the 'rejection' pile, as in, not even considered to still be taken. They think that it is a pathetic excuse to get your parents, or teachers, to call as they are taking you into the university, not your parents or teachers. With all due respect, they also said that if the person cannot make the telephone call themselves then how would they really cope living away from home on their own?

I do empathise with you, and understand how difficult, and daunting it must be if you have a phobia of using the telephone to strangers, but get some practice in. Practising on the telephone will cure your fears, just start by ringing to book a table in a restaurant or whatever, where it doesn't matter if you can't do it etc.

To be fair, I sort of feel that your college/school would be doing you a disservice if they called for you as they know how universities feel about the topic.

Hope this has sort of helped. You have got a few weeks left to practise your telephone manner. Practice makes perfect!

It's really important to make the call yourself - it shows independence etc and also, they may need to ask questions that only you can answer. Our teachers have told us to do it while they are nearby though, so if necessary they can confirm information for us, like telling the university we were only a mark away from the required grade, or that there was a problem with teaching.

When you call them though, what can you say bar o please let me in?

Beg them! Butter them up, say how you have got your heart set on the uni etc say how it is the course for you. Say what you have done over the summer to strengthen your application. If you're only a few marks away then say this. JUST BEG! That's my intention if I fail to meet the requirements.

Do it yourself.

I don't like talking on the phone much either but if I happen to miss my offer, then I sure as hell will pluck up the courage from somewhere. If you are really passionate about your subject/university and narrowly miss your offer, then you should still be able to get a place on your course if you communicate this over the phone on results day. The last thing you want to do is let someone else ring them up because they are not the one wanting to go to university and they will be unable to explain why you as an individual deserve a place on the course. 'I know I missed my offer but the main thing is that I got a high A in English. I have read around my subject and know that I am capable of succeeding. I do not want to go to any other university because the course content will not be the same and I am particularly interested in studying Gothic Literature, which is unique to your university' sounds much more impressive than 'Rachel is a hard-working student and I think she deserves a place on the course'.
You could ask one of your teachers to phone the uni for you, but it would look much better if you did it yourself. You're the one who wants to go to uni, so it's you they need to talk to. They'll probably ask you questions such as why you want to go to their uni to do their course, why you think you'll succeed despite missing your offer, what else you could bring to the uni, anything else impressive you've done that could convince them to let you in etc etc, which a teacher couldn't really tell them. Phoning the uni yourself also shows you have some initiative and that you really want to go there. I hate speaking on the phone too, and it's obvious just from this thread that a lot of people do, but it's something you have to get used to if you're going to move away from home for uni.

I thought i'd post in here in stead of creating a new thread.. How early does UCAS update to let you know if you got in or not to your chosen uni? I know it's up there before the results are available from school / college - but is there a specific time?

7am onwards but apparently some have seen Track update earlier....i'm guessing there'll be some kind of obsessive checking on track once midnight strikes :p:

Yeah, the unis know a few days before the students do. But part of their contract with UCAS to sort the bulk of their applications means the Universities are forbidden from communicating your results to you before results day.

Ah, I wondered why they didn't tell us.
Call yourself.

I'm sorry, but just do it. I know you might find it hard, but seriously, it's only a phone call. And if you can't make a phone call, how can you go to uni and live independently?

You can do it OP! Besides, you might not even need to make such a call! fingers crossed.

Hi there,
If you want that palce im afraid you are going to have to. also if you are really worried you can mail them regarding your concerns, because i mean they have made you the offer they cant retract it either so you can ask if they are willing to be lienet. Also UEA isnt that compeitive im sure they will be accomodating. my cousin is going there for Maths, the offer was ABB but they will allow ABC, he wasnt an exceptional student it took him 3 years to get 3 a-levels lol, but then maths is an undersubscribed course! but your course is pretty popular i think! but all you can do is contact them  hope that helps!
