I've got a tribal dislike of the Tory Party but this **** has me almost thinking about voting for them.

It's interesting that we've been told by right wing Conservatives and UKIPers about how the UK could become like Switzerland if it left the EU, with Switzerland being this bastion of prosperity and the free world, but when Corbyn talks about things like not having Trident or being part of NATO collective security we get this mass panic about how it would leave the UK defenceless and isolated.

Switzerland seems to manage fine outside NATO and without wasting taxpayers money on nuclear defences, perhaps without blowing money on overseas conflicts and unnecessary defence spending that's how they are able to keep taxes low and maintain a good investment environment.

Within NATO, Erdogan can be provocative towards Putin knowing that British lives will be able to be sacrificed to fight for Turkey.

Switzerland has the benefit of being landlocked and surrounded by friendly countries all engaged in collective defence, it's a de-facto NATO protectorate anyway.

This relates to helping defend our NATO allies in a conventional war if they're attacked(Turkey isn't an issue, they're already looking for closer ties with Russia), it's not about embarking on regime change in the Middle East based on dodgy intelligence. Putin's sabre rattling and expansionism is the very reason we shouldn't be cutting back on defence spending.

Then we can take the Swiss approach and become a "de-facto NATO protectorate".

Personally I don't think we should cut defence spending and rely on using our neighbours as a buffer zone.

We'd be toast in the event of a war. Or maybe not. You need to be able to make soldiers.

Please justify the position that we should leave NATO.

Would you also want mandatory conscription like the Swiss then? All 18 year old men must serve with approximately 2/3s in the military with the rest doing alternative jobs. The Swiss also have a somewhat liberal approach to firearms that would probably horrify most Brits.
Basically the Swiss determined their defence against invasion was building tough defences & an armed population. They also have better natural defences then most of Europe due to the mountainous terrain.

Yeah I remember reading that every Military age male keeps an assault rifle at home for this very purpose; good luck with that one here.

We should be more like Iceland, they have no standing army and only been invaded once during WWII.

They only have a population of c300k and NATO will always guarantee their security because of their strategic location.

I respect his commitment to pacifism but he's a fool IMO, does he seriously believe that his anti-Western mates all share the same opinions as him about it?

See this mistake quite a lot. Corbyn is not a pacifist, he is quite happy to see violence used when it support his cause. For example the IRA

I should have said unilateralism, he's delusional enough to think it will work.

Those who don't have peaceful intentions won't suddenly change their tune when faced by people in a position of weakness, they'll look to exploit it.

Maybe he really wants western civilisation bought down or he's just an idiot, or a combination of the two.
