VM402 – Dog Fighting Motion 2016, TSR Labour Party
This House condemns the barbaric 'sport' of dog fighting that was made illegal almost 200 years ago.

This House recognises that the findings of a 2015 investigation by the League Against Cruel Sports that discovered a widespread culture of cruelty and criminality across the United Kingdom, suggesting that a dog fight takes place somewhere every single day. Dog fighting is a 'gateway' crime with connections to gangs and gambling.

Thus, noting that dog fighting offends the sensibilities of a great many of our constituents as well as flouting common decency and the law of the land, this House calls on the government to implement to the fullest extent the recommendations of the LACS in its 'National Dog Fighting Action Plan'.

    These recommendations include:
    • A national task-force led by a senior government figure.
    • Introduction of legislation introducing a specific dog fighting offence with tougher sentences for those found guilty as well as the introduction of rehabilitation programmes (which the Opposition will be happy to work with all parties and the government to draft and pass).
    • A review of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, a deeply flawed piece of legislation widely criticised by canine behaviour experts.
    • For those who have been prosecuted for an offence and banned from keeping animals to be kept on a national register so such bans are more enforceable.

A national task force? That's what the RSPCA is for surely.

Why do you want to ban dogfighting? Do you want the Japs on your tail?!

A national task force to look after fleabags? Absurd. Of all the things state resources need to be spent on, this is surely right at the bottom.

The national obsession with dogs continues to confound.
