It's a common side effect.
I get PMS as well, though not as badly as you do. I've been told taking Evening Primrose Oil capsules helps (these also have vitamin E in, so they help your skin as well!)

It's a common side effect.


No, it can be a side effect, but many girls do not experience weight gain from the pill. Also, considering how many different pills are available there's a good chance that you'll find one that works for you. Not to mention that the weight gain is normally only because the side effect is an increase in appetite, and so if you control your diet then you shouldn't put on any weight.

At the end of the day, if you're really unhappy about your PMS then the best thing to do is to talk to your GP - and if they suggest the pill, then at least give it a go. Either way, talking to a professional is much better than asking a bunch of students.

No, they're not fattening at all. I'm not sure how they work, but I've tried it and it does alleviate the symptoms. Also, if you get sore boobs around your period they help with that too.

As with so many of these things, you're not likely to find a good physiological mechanism for it. This is not, however, to say that it doesn't work. It's harmless, inexpensive and pretty much hassle-free, so you've got very little to lose by giving it a shot.

And it'll only be as fattening as the oil that's in the capsule, which is vry little in the grand scheme of things.

Whichever way you word it, the effect is negative.

Increase in appetite - a possible side effect, but not definite.
Weight gain - only possible if you don't control your diet if you end up with an increased appetite.

I'm sorry, but I don't see why you wouldn't even be willing to try something that could make you feel better, especially since the weight gain isn't that likely. I'd much rather try something that has a good chance of improving my PMS and periods, than to completely ignore it because there's a slight chance that it could increase my appetite. As long as you control your diet, and if required, do a bit of exercise then you won't get that negative effect.
Even if you do gain weight, its only slight, and like meg said, a bit of light regular exercise will keep any extra weight at bay easily.
IMO, the positive effects far outweigh the negatives.
Erm, I'm with loopymeg here. This sounds serious, and you should be going to the doctor's, not asking people on here. And acting on an increase in appetite is entirely your choice, it doesn't automatically lead to a higher food intake.

the pill does not itself make you fat. i am on diannette and was previously on microgynon and in the booklets inside the side effect said "watch what you eat while you are on the pill as the pill makes some people feel more hungry and so they eat more food hence become fatter, the pill does not directly make you fatter"

People have different opinions about taking the pill. I went on it because my periods were unbearable and it did alleviate my problems for a time. However, when I finally came off it my periods were completely messed up and they have been ever since. Furthermore, I’ve read a number of articles/reviews that have linked the pill to infertility later on in life. Ok so that’s that bit out of the way. I’d recommend taking evening primrose oil - it is really good for you and it might help to ease the symptoms that you’re experiencing.

I watched a documentary on PMS symptoms the other day. These women were suffering terribly and their periods were, quite literally, destroying their lives! They would have 2 weeks of hell once and month and it was debilitating (e.g. mood swings, really low days, anger etc.)… A week later the pre-period symptoms would kick off again. They did this diet experiment and the results were quite good although it didn’t help everyone (about 50/50 improvement). They recommended increasing your intake of dairy products especially - milk, cheese, yoghurt and eggs… and in oily fish e.g. sardines, mackerel, salmon etc (there are more I just can’t remember them!). Oily fish has lots of vitamin D which enables your body to absorb the calcium you’re getting from the dairy products. Eggs contain some Vitamin D but fish is tons better (one portion of fish is as effective as 6 eggs). It might work… if it doesn’t at least you gave something different a go. I’d also recommend taking regular exercise before and during your period. Go on lots of short, brisk walks and when you start to feel down do some gentle exercises.

PMS is definitely not a laughing matter and I really think that if these symptoms persist that you should visit your doctor. It can be very debilitating and you have my greatest sympathy… and understanding!

oh and by the way, i have lost almost a stone while being on the pill anyway so it obviously doesn't increase everyones appetite. i was 9st7 and now i am around 8st10

It's not like you suddenly put on a stone when you start the pill. Most people only put on a lb or two, if anything. I put on a few lbs but it all went to my boobs. Don't be so quick to put it down. You can always switch pills if you do find that you're putting on a lot of weight. Or you could just watch what you're eating.
