The Student Room Group

Student Support Network

Hi

This is just an idea which I've been thinking about but I feel like I'd like to do something to tackle what is a huge problem for many students.

I'd like to start by creating a new website designed for and run by students offering support and advice to those suffering from depression.

I myself suffer from depression and have not yet recovered ... so I feel that this may help me to tackle it and if perhaps it can help others by getting involved and doing something pro-active it could develop into a positive and useful resource offering practical non-judgemental advice.

I'd love to get different organisations on board if it takes off , maybe support from TSR (obviously not financial!!) NUS etc

This is the first step, and if anyone is interested then let's have a discussion about it.

That's sounds like a great idea.

Perhaps TSR can create a student support network with reps from each uni?

Sounds like a good plan. Count me in too.

It would be more effective if this was a TSR addition ;yes;

i agree that it would good if we got TSR involved.

i think it needs to be independant though ... seperate site etc.

i like the idea of student reps

i'd like to maybe start a mailing list and basically create another place to turn when stuff goes tits up.

there are plenty of opportunities here ... but to provide easily accessible advice i think is very crucial.

What would also be fantastic is if we could provide an e-counselling service almost ... only if we can get counsellors on board.

i DO NOT want this to turn into a bad advice site where people who think they know stuff give bad advice ... very few of us are qualified to do this ... including myself. so i think that the support of other organisations is crucial. The first thing to do is to get a list of those interested. i shall add your username to the first post as you express interest.
I certainly think it's a good idea. Keep me informed, anyway.

But, could you clarify what this project is actually meant to do? :s-smilie:

Perhaps provide a support netwrok for students in each university?

Clarification: what does this support network aim to do that the TSR depression soc or Connexions can't do?

It does sound like a good idea but like general just asked, I'd like to know what the website will do. I'm suffering at the moment and I'd like to help myself as well as other people. There are many websites, organisations, forums etc. out there that are aimed at helping people with depression but it would be good to get something set up specifically tailored to those going through depression... and, like you said, not just lots of people offering 'bad' advice. What would this site have to offer? - tips on making people feel better? Advice on what to do? Mutual support for people who feel alone and isolated from those around them? If we, you... who ever is putting this site together could let us know what it is you want to achieve then it'll be a lot easier to get going. I'm all for:smile:
You know thats uncanny I had exactly the same idea!

Unfortunately I know nothing about making websites but I am a mod on a few forums, so if you need any help with anything Id love to be a part of something like this.

I think even if "professional" advice cannot be provided it would be nice just for people who are suffering in depression to have a dedicated space like that, Its defintely something I wish I had.

If you have or can find someone with the technical know-how I think that would be the first start.
Good plan  Count me in.

sounds good, so many people would benefit from it if it works out.

So where now? We should keep this thread going if we actually want anything to come of it. Random bloke - are you working on a site at the moment? xx

If you want this to become a proper TSR-based thing, I'd suggest forming some sort of proper plan for it, and then bringing it to AAM. Though I'd be interested to see how you answer generalebriety's questions first.
