Hi everyone, I'm starting my A2 course for WJEC English Lit in September but am trying to get a head start for the coursework aspect.

You have to write about two novels in an essay and I have decided to use The Lake House by Kate Morton as my post 2000 novel. It's a fictional mystery with links to a missing child, PTSD and family secrets (I highly recommend it for a good read!) However, I am struggling to find a pre 2000 novel that has similar themes or narrative to this. Does anyone know of any good books pre 2000 that I could possibly use??

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you

How about The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. He is the grandfather of the Golden Age Crime Novel. The novel is huge though. It's about how a woman in white is found alone by an aristocrat and there comes an investigation of how this woman escaped from an asylum. But, the investigation leads to something more and is revealed the escaped woman has something to do with the man who finds her and his family and the house they live in... So you have a missing person, mental illness issues and family secrets. So I guess you could do with this.

Another Victorian novel is called Lady Audley's Secret by Auden - it's about a woman who acts as someone else in order to murder someone in a household. It's a lot shorter than White, but as just as good.
