Hallam Sport Classes (Ju-Jitsu & Kickboxing)

I'm going to be attending Hallam University this year and i've been thinking about getting gold membership for all the sporting facilities.

Does anyone here go to the ju-jitsu/kickboxing classes? If so, what are they like.

I'm very interested in mixed martial arts and i know the basics of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Is the ju-jitsu taught at Hallam anything like the jiu-jitsu made famous by the Gracie's?

Any info would be appreciated

I go to Sheffield Uni, but our Jitsu club trains down at Hallam Sport once a week, and up at our Uni twice a week.

It's nothing like Brazilian Jitsu (The Gracie's), we train in the original, Japanese style of Jitsu, which means throws/locks/disarms from a standing position mostly, rather than BJJ which is almost exclusively on the ground.

If you're interested in Kickboxing, I suggest that you look into doing Muay Thai at Wicker Camp. It isnt far from the universities, and is one of the best thai boxing/kick boxing camps in the UK.

Moving slightly off-topic, would there be any clubs which you could attend to start something like Kickboxing from scratch?

I'd be interested in doing something like this too but again from scratch. I was thinking more of aikido but I'm not very knowledgeable in differences between aikido, jiu-jitsu, judo, etc. they all seem the same to me.

Go to the sport fair during fresher's week at uni. All the different martial arts club had stands in one corner of the Octagon. I went up and asked, saying I was a total beginner, why should I go for this martial art over any of the others, and they will willingly spill out info telling you why they believe theirs is best. Seems certain ones are more about throws, others focused on kicking, others more spiritual etc.

Cheers! I'll do that. I've always liked the chute box style in MMA.

Aikido's influences include Jujitsu and Judo. Hallamshire Aikido Club is a well established club in Sheffield, they also have dojos up and down the country.
A couple of interesting Aikido video clips from two very different perspectives. Here & here.

If you join the Aikido club you'll train with uni and hallam together. You are taught by Scott: http://youtube.com/watch?v=DC9CyuZqaSE

The style is Shodokan Aikido.
