Cooking for yourself in catered halls?

Hi all,

Going to catered halls in September, but wodnered do we still have access to a kitchen, to cook for ourselves if we wish?

I would obviously be eating the food provided most of the time but would probably fancy cooking myself my favourite meal from time to time aswell.

If there is access to a kitchen, do we need to provide our own cooking equipment, eg pots and pans?

Thanks.

At the universities that I know of, you will only be provided with a very small kitchen if you are in catered accommodation. You'll have some storage space for snacks, and some form of fridge or whatever, but you're unlikely to have a proper cooker. A microwave, kettle, toaster and perhaps an induction hob is probably all you'll get - and if you have an induction hob then you'll have to use special pots on it, which may be provided for you.

The best way to find out exactly what you'll have is to look at the accommodation site/leaflets for your chosen university.

most catered halls i know of are the same.you'd get:
kettle
microwave
toaster (not guaranteed)
electric hob (not guaranteed)
fridge

and this is after it's been advised that you'll be provided with a full proper kitchen (i.e. cooker and all). if you really want to do some cooking, you could buy a rice cooker, obviously it'll take ages etc but they are handy little things. just make sure you're allowed it,and if not, hide it when not in use.

Thanks for the replies! I won't bring any pans and plates and stuff to start with but if they have facilities I'll pop home and get some plates etc!

What do you do about coffee etc in the morning, do catered halls provide that or do you bring your own?

I would assume that your university has a tea/coffee machine or something similar in the dining hall, so you should be able to have your morning caffeine hit with your breakfast

Also, since you should have a kettle in your little kitchen, you could make a flask full of coffee for yourself if you really wanted to.
