Applying for "non-till" jobs at Tesco

I wonder if anyone who works at Tesco can help me. I am interested in working in the bakery, dairy or deli sections but I don't know what skills/qualifications I would need, especially for bakery. I don't want to apply for checkout operator, so what do I put on the application form for position applied for? What jobs can I apply for in the dairy/bakery sections as a full time student?

Thanks for any help

Ok the position you want is general assistant, which is everything apart from tills

Bakery hours would probably not suit you as its really early mornings for the bakers (4am starts) and for those on bread and cakes. Although there may be a saturday vaccancy packaging bread etc.
Fresh (basically the chillers) would probably be better as it offers more oppertunities for part time work as twilight shifts (5pm-10pm) are avalible. Grocery(tins, cereals etc) and non food(stationary, Cd's, DVD's, health products) are also good jobs for part time students and should not be overlooked. Deli counters are also ok for students and i believe this would come under counter staff on the application form.

You dont need any qualifications just your GCSE's or predicted results will usually secure you a job. I've been there since 16 and all i had was my predicted GCSE's, i now have my A levels and am part way through a degree. The pay is also good compared to other supermarkets, pay will vary slightly depending on your department, i know bakery and counter staff get paied slightly more per hour although i do believe it is only a few pence.

I work as a bakery Assistant in my local Tesco.

All you need is really an interest in the bakery and understand a good food hygiene. I have a NVQ level 2 in Health and Hygiene which of course helped me get a job in the bakery but i'm one of the few on our dept who has that. All you need is GCSEs at a good level. I suggest again putting General Assistant and then maybe stating which depts you would like to work on. As for the hours suggested above. They are wrong. A general Bakery Assistant hours are between 9am-10pm. Fish Counter is i think 9am-7pm and the Deli is simliar. The only people who start at 6am are the fish monger and the baker themselves. I wish you good luck with it. I have noticed tho that the bakery dept are generally short on staff so you'll have no problem. If your not happy on the tills its within Tesco interest to get you into a role that you are happy about so you can work better for them. Tesco are really easy pleased and happy to help.

The hours i stated were correct for my store.
Is there a reason you dont want to work on the tills.
People who work on the deli do not usually solely work there. You have to progress to being on the counters. Generally, you will have to work on shop floor, stacking shelves and cleaning, and pick up the odd bit of training here and there. So you'll be a General Assistant, but learn deli skills so you can do overtime there.

Bakery staff positions are quite rare in Tesco, as they are very specialised areas and people generally work solely on bakery. The people who do learn the bakery skills are usually full time workers, who will be with the company for the foreseeable future. They don't tend to take part timers, because its such a hassle to train and retrain when people leave.

Dairy section is nothing special. They'll give you a position as a General Assistant, assigned to a particular section of the store. I am a General Assistant on the Provisions department at my store, so I work with milk occasionally, but mainly the chilled goods like cheese and ready meals. When you're a General Assistant, you will be till trained and expected to go down and help out during busy times.

Being trained on the tills is good if you'll ever want overtime, as most departments and bakeries and delis have very little in this regard. Checkouts always need people to do overtime though.

Kind of. I don't want to sound like a cop-out but I used to work on a change desk in the amusements, I found using tills and dealing with customers and money at busy times made me panic and get upset when something went wrong and I couldn't count properly. I tried really hard because I enjoyed it when it wasn't so busy, but I was really bad at it and most nights I would have to cash up and I always made mistakes, lost money etc. Now whenever I think about using tills in a busy shop I just feel dread. I really don't think I could handle it because I don't have the patience and I would get stressed out with people like I do in the restaurant.

I just don't know what to do now. I don't think Tesco would employ me if I told them that I panic and get stressed dealing with customers at busy times. I wouldn't even employ myself!
What about work behind the scenes, ie answering phones or doing secretarial sort of jobs? Do Tesco employ part timers for this?

Working hours are going to be difficult this year. I need weekends off for volunteering and work experience so I can only work mon-thurs nights. I might as well give up now :frown:
