Why am I tired all the time?

I started my summer holiday on Friday, and since I've been getting more sleep (9-10 hours a night) and spending all my time at home, I've been more tired than usual. I always need a stretch, and I'm constantly telling my family I'm tired and they have no solutions.

I used to be quite underweight from being overweight, started running and eating a lot less (this was a year ago now) and over the past year I've been putting weight on and am now a healthy weight. But, I can't seem to get away from my family for more than half an hour. I've been at home watching DVDs with them for the past 3 days, get about an hour to myself, so I don't have time for any sort of set out exercise.

I've been drinking 1-2 litres of water daily, 2 cans of coke zero sugar, and eating oven-baked high-protein foods, toast, cereal and popcorn. Why is this happening? I've always felt sluggish for the past year but this is the worst. I don't have any energy to do anything. Even typing this is difficult. And why am I like this? I'm 5'6, 17, male, and weigh around 8 stone now (used to be 7 stone a year ago). What should I do to sort it out? :frown:
Maybe you should go and get your bloods checked at the doctors? That may come up with a solution ;yes;

Maybe you could be a little anaemic?
112lbs isn't a lot of weight for anyone, even if you're 5'6" - Go to the Doctors as soon as you get the chance.

I have an injection with the nurse tomorrow - I'll try asking for an appointment then.

I had similar symptoms, tiredness all the time, weight gain etc and it turns out i have an underactive thyroid. If you mention your symptoms to your gp they will probably send you for a blood test to rule it out anyway.

Join a gym, which will give you more energy, routine and might help with the weight gain. I'd say even 8 stone is too light but going to a doctor seems a little drastic.

Hmm, it could be anything, because for the past few years my uncle has felt constantly tired, and as if he has been working out all night when he wakes up (thats how tired he feels). He also was quite underweight, and found weight gain pretty difficult since he can remember. Recently he went to the doctors for a blood test, and it was found he had coeliac's disease which is basically gluten intolerance - gluten, if you don't know already, is found in some cereals, notably wheat, rye, and barley, along with lots of other day to day foods!! Now he has cut these out of his diet, he seems to be back to normal with more energy!

So best bet is to just book an appointment with your doctor, and he/she will look after quite well/get to the bottom of your problem, and you will be fine!

i had a stage in my life when i felt tired all the time. common causes are anaemia, although thats much more common in females, but men can get it. thats when theres not sufficent iron in your blood and its easily treatable.
for me it turned out that i was getting over a bout of glandular fever that i hadnt realised i had. glandular fever is common in teenagers, but a simple blood test will test both possibilities and hopefully lead to treatment.

i personally find the more i sleep the more i tired i am (within reason). lik at uni im used to sleeping maybe 6 hourse and night and more at weekends. when i do get a good 10 hours at weekends or holidays i jus feel even more tired throughout the day. its really strange.

If you've been running on very little sleep etc at uni, and constantly on the go, now that you're able to unwind a bit it can make you feel constantly sleepy and tired, even tho you're sleeping more. Thats what always happens to me for the first week or two anyway!

How I wish that were true.

Doctors are crap when it comes to tiredness.

Too much sleep does me in. I can sleep for 14 hours and be tired within 5 hours of getting up, its rubbish because whole weeks can basically vanish because you're sleeping. Whilst bread might be high in protien, its probably not as high as red meet. Also eat more carbohydrates since thats what really gives you energy, things like pasta. Just try to eat quite a lot and eat good stuff. I used to be tired all the time and it was mainly down to a really bad diet. Getting a multivitamin might be an idea, its helped me certainly (though the tablet is like a horse tablet, its hardcore), even if some of it is just a placebo effect. Anemia is chiefly caused through a lack of iron, so while going the doc and getting a check of it is a good idea, this can obviously be helped to an extent by having a multivitamen which will have plenty of iron in it. Try to jsut get 8-9 hours kip, make your bed times regular, dont sleep in too much - just get up and take the pain. Sort your diet out, get a multivitamin and get a bit more active (running ect), will sort you out. Going the doctors to check for any proper complaints is a good idea too.

Right, I've got a blood test in August for this and I'm wondering whether to go through with it or not. I'm anxious about this blood test already, and I don't know the procedure. Maybe I don't need to? Could I just need a change in lifestyle? Any other probable reason to avoid having my blood removed?

Its best to get your blood checked. A blood test is nothing to worry about, you feel a slight scratch as the needle goes in and thats it.
Been there, it does suck.

They're right - usually it's because of that thyroid gland or iron deficiency. But if after visiting your doctor you'll find out that there's nothing wrong with your blood - might wanna check your nose. Maybe even get a nose job (whatever it's called). People feel tired if they can't breathe properly (or breathe with their mouths all the time).

The procedure doesn't look pleasant and requires some time to recover but after a couple of months, in the morning you're all fresh and don't need an ice shower to wake up.

Which procedure takes a couple of months to recover from - the blood test or nose job?!
Hell of an imagination, my friend.

Bump, just got the results from my blood test and my blood is normal. So there's nothing wrong in my blood, what could it be then? They literally told me the results and that was it, no explanation for why I'm tired. Any advice? I think it might be what I'm eating then, but I don't know how to change my diet really because I usually eat quite healthily.

Any good advice please.

You are probably oversleeping, I often find when I sleep too much I get lethargic. Do a bit of exercise during the day (even if it is just a walk to town) and don't drink any caffeine. If you generally eat healthily then you're probably fine, just a temporary blip....

You definitely need to eat more though, try and aim for 3000 calories a day of good food (ie not ready meals, high calorie desserts etc) Cut out the coke and drink more water, personally I must drink getting on for a gallon a day....
