Getting a University to release you for clearing?

^ Just wondering if this was possible? I found a place at a University through ucas extra after being rejected by my top 3 choices. However, it's possible that I could achieve above my predicted grades at A Level and I really want to go to Leeds, particularly to study english. If, on results day, I find I have higher grades than expected and see the course I want in clearing, would the other University release me in order for me to apply through clearing, even though I met the grades for that University?

Also, is it likely that if you are initially rejected for one course at a particular university then achieve better grades than expected and see the course in clearing, that they would accept you second time around?

Sorry if this post is confusing, it's confusing me!
You'd need to phone your uni on results day and ask them to release you. Most of the time, they'll do it because they don't want someone who doesn't want to be there when they could give the place to someone else who does, but the only problem is that they'll be very busy on results day and releasing you won't be their highest priority, so they could drag their feet about it, which could cause you to miss out on getting a place elsewhere because good Clearing places go quickly. If the reason a uni initially rejected you was your predicted grades and you then achieved higher grades on results day, it's possible they'd accept you that time, especially as they'd need to fill their places if they were in Clearing.

Ah right thanks, makes more sense now. I decided to email the University today with a few questions, so just waiting on their reply now.

Just thought of something, the clearing places come out before results day don't they? So could I ask to be released from my current University beforehand and actually apply for the clearing place before results day? Both unis are asking for the same grades anyway.

I think the Clearing places only come out on results day and that's when the process officially opens, so I don't think you'll be able to actually apply before then, especially since you won't have your results, but you could phone the uni, ask them if they'll be in Clearing and ask them how likely they'd be to offer you a place if you got the grades they're asking for, just to get an idea.

However, if the University agrees to keep a place for you, then it may be possible that when Clearing does officially open on results day, your place will automatically come up on UCAS.

This is one for PQ really, but I don't think so. If the OP is released from the uni where she currently holds an offer before results day, all her Track will show is that she is eligible for Clearing.
The official line from UCAS is that if you have made a firm choice and you fulfil its requirements and your place is confirmed, you have NO CHOICE but to attend that University, or drop out of University for the entire of the 2007/8 year. In other words, if you get the grades required for your Firm Choice, you are not eligible for clearing.

The university will not release you, because that way they're re-negeing on their side of the contract. You are bound in law.

Thanks for your replies, had an email back from Leeds today saying that if there are some places, then the uni can arrange for me to transfer from Leeds and be released from my current university on results day.

One more question, sorry! How likely is it that, if I go through clearing, I would be able to get a place in the halls? Is it more likely that I will have to find alternative accommodation? Thanks again!

It depends on the uni and how much accommodation they have, but I think generally Clearing students do get a place in halls if they want one. Just don't expect to get a choice and you might have to wait until someone drops out, which actually happens quite a bit in the first few months.

I did this myself, and the best way to do it is just to contact the university directly and ask them to release you from your place. I applied to do a course at Sheffield and Strathclyde (my firm and insurance offers) and they both released me. The UCAS website does clearly state that you would have to drop out for the whole year if you change your mind but that's far from the case so pay little attention to that. My path to getting released from my places was advised to me by my school careers advisor and a local connexions advisor so don't worry this will work I have plenty of friends who have changed their minds and had to do this kind of thing so just grovel and be apologetic and you certainly won't incur any problems.

I had a firm with Warwick and requested them to release me. However, when I logged into Track, the page showed, "You have withdrawn from UCAS".

What is this??!?!?!?!??!?!

I wanted to enter clearing. Can someone pls advise?

It looks like you may have accidentally withdrawn your whole application from UCAS for this year, which would mean you wouldn't be able to go through Clearing. Phone UCAS and explain that you only wanted to decline your Warwick offer, not withdraw your application. How did you do it? Did you just phone Warwick and ask them to release you or did you do anything on Track, like click withdraw or decline?

Actually I sent an email to Warwick telling them that I want to withdraw. Well, that was my mistake as I assumed once I have withdrawn, I will automatically be put into the Clearing.

Now I have to send a second email telling them to put me back on Clearing. Hope they do it as soon as possible.

I guess Warwick thought you meant you were withdrawing from UCAS rather than just asking them to release you and they informed UCAS. Hope you get it sorted out soon anyway
