I'll be joining Aston Uni this September and my rent will be just over 5k for the year. My parents are quite high earners so my student finance doesn't cover the rent (3.8k over the three terms...) and to make things worse, my parents aren't helping me at all with any funding. Are there any students or past students out there that could give me some advice.. How difficult is it to find a job in the Aston area? When I went to the open day, I believe there was a department within the Uni where you could hand your CV to, and they'll help you search for a job, but I'm not sure. How often were you working during the week and how much were you getting paid weekly? Also, how diffucult is it to balance a part time job with a social life and education?

Aston University is literally a 10 minute walk from the Bullring, and a lot of the stores there will be looking at hiring Christmas temps around October-November, so you shouldn't find too much difficultly getting a job if you have a bit of retail experience. Honestly, the pay very much depends on the shop. You're not likely to get a job at a high end place straight off, so you'll be looking at minimum wageish, which should get you an extra £200 if you're working 8 hours or so.
There should be a lot of jobs around the university as well, and they'll tend to pay a bit more, but I just think it's nice to get into town.
