Here we have it - the Official 2018 Oxford Offer Holders' Thread!

This thread is in particular for those applying to Oxford this October for courses starting in September 2018, but obviously, anyone is welcome to participate.

Feel free to talk about anything Oxford - Courses, social life, colleges, admissions tests & interviews, and anything else which springs to mind.

To start off, icebreakers:
What did you get at GCSE?
What A levels are you studying?
If you did AS levels, what did you get?
What are you predicted?
What course will you be applying for?
What extra-curricular activities do you do?
Any colleges you're interested in? And why?
Why Oxford and not Cambridge?

I guess I'll start:

GCSEs - 7A*s 3As 1B plus an A in additional maths.
AS levels - Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Economics - AAAA
A2 - Maths Further Maths and Physics
Course - Physics
Extra-curricular stuff - Football, running, athletics, Labour Party member, run a politics club at my school.
College: The Queen's
Why Oxford? Prefer the physics course at Oxford to the NatSci one at Cambridge.

Your GCSEs are definitely good enough for acceptance (I believe above average for a law applicant) so yes! All you need to do now is get good A levels and do well in the LNAT (and interview if you get one).

There isnt a formal requirement, byt the average is between 4-7A*s :smile:

Naah, an A would be fine. I am not an expert but the general requirement is just a C. However if you are applyig for English then you msy be at a slight disadvantage since most applicants would have an A*. But it won't be a deciding factor :smile:

Well Oxford focuses more on GCSE results, so if you do well in them, you should choose Oxford over Cambridge! Not 100% certain of choosing Oxford over Cambridge right now, depends how I find my A levels.
Results + Extra Curricular: In my about me section
Course: Economics
College: Not too sure, it's a bit early to choose I think ahaha
Why Oxford: I prefer Economics at Cambridge actually, but I did surprisingly well in GCSEs, so for now it's Oxford :smile:

For me, it's the courses they offer. Oxford offer a physics course (as well as biology biochemistry chemistry etc.) whereas Cambridge offer Natural Sciences, which is a mixture of different sciences. Even though you eventually specialise, I'd rather do physics from the start... at least for now. What about you?

This is an oversimplification really, since the amount GCSEs are important varies by subject at Oxford and also with the loss of normal AS levels following A level reforms this means Cambridge will be changing their methods I would think, since now even less applicants will have AS UMS.
Pick between the two by comparing the courses you're interested in. They might be a lot different or only a little between the two, but chances are they won't be identical. Also look at the applications process for each one (entrance exams etc.)

Hi! My name's Anne (kinda obvious from the nickname) :smile:

11 A*; gonna do Chemisty, Bio, Maths, History
I would like to do Medicine
I participate in school musicals as extra-cirriculars; also like tennis and badminton. I absolutely love physics (espcially Astronomy), too, but was told that's not needed for Medicine that much. I think I would like to organise an expedition across the Himalayas/Andes.
College: Epsom College, Surrey
Why Oxford: was fascinated by it since I was a child! My older brother tried getting there but he started college right after coming put of the Russian educational system, so they didn't take him, apparently (don't know how that worked). I've read so much about it - for instance, their online volunteer mission to translate the ancient Egyptian scrolls among which a play about Exodus was found.

But now I'm nervous, cuz people always say A Levels are hell! I'm willing to work hard, and study almost all the time.

As a matter of fact, just before i saw your post i was reading through the cambridge maths with physics course and it seemed really interesting! I now have a decision to make which I'll make when i start my A levels :smile:

It is more appealing than NatSci.
