Hey there tom?

I've just completed a BTEC Business. It is a good course to take and i fully recommend it. It's all coursework and its alot. There are 18 units over 2 years, 9 units per year. There are approx 3 assignments per unit, sometimes only two and a couple that are only one.

One tip if you do take the course which i never did, is meet every deadline. Don't leave it to the last minute. The first year i never really tried and i came out with a Merit scoring 36 points out of a total 60. This effected my end score which was a DMM (Distinction, Merit, Merit). If i had tried harder in my first year i could easily got DDM or maybe DDD. So keep on top of your work and put full effort into every assignment.

Two units are known as IVA, one taken in year 1 and the other in year 2. These units are externally marked and are worth double points.

The points system (these points are per assignment, for e.g. if you get a pass on one assignment you get 2 points):

Pass = 2 points
Merit = 4 points
Distinction = 6 points.

Some units are enjoyable, and others i just wanted to get the pass and forget about them asap.

I scored 280 ucas points and got my first choice uni position, so if your worried that unis don't accept BTEC's, they do.

Any questions just ask mate.

Ross

^^Exactly what I was going to write - Ross has explained it well

I did BTEC Nat Cert in Business a year ago - exactly the same apart from its 6 assignments less. I thoroughly enjoyed it and worked my socks off to do well. definately keep on top of the work load - if you fall behind, you'll be playing ''catch up'' with the rest of the class.

Good luck

As it's all assignment based you get your marks back from each piece of work probably within/by the end of the month you handed it in and probably sooner, so you know your year grade by the end of term.

I agree with the above where you HAVE to meet the deadlines. I did a BTEC in Business and did hardly any work in the first year and most of the second and then just did as much work as possible in the last two-three weeks and I've got a DDD (I think anyway,) but anyway I wouldn't recommend doing that do the work on time.

Do you have to have a job to do this course I work at Hombase would that be ok.

^^I had a part time job - Sainsbury's at the time and in some parts of the course it did come in handy to me, however some people didnt have a job in my class. So i guess its not essential but could benefit you in some parts of the course.

This isn't an NVQ, although it is vocational. So a job is not absaloutly necassary, as it can be taken as an alternative to A-levels or alongside A-level (which is what I did), provided your college allows this.

Hello
I have changed my mind and instead of doing the BTEC nation diploma in computing I am thinking about doing the BTEC National Diploma in Business. Does anyone here do it, what is it like, enjoyable, hard? Please give me as much info as possible thanks.

Hi,

I've done this course and I really enjoyed it a lot. There is a lot of coursework which you'll need to do but as long as you work hard you will do very well. Be prepared for 10,000 word assignments. :smile:

Mine were a very minimum of 7,000 words. But it depends, if you were to aim for Distinctions then you would be expected to go the extra mile. I know it seems like much but I really enjoyed the course and it didn't seem like I was doing a lot of coursework. A word of warning though, make sure that Business is for you because if it's not you are unlikely to enjoy the course. I have a friend who did the course with me but was really interested in Sport. He didn't enjoy the course much but he worked hard and did well. Not as well as me but still :biggrin:

Then I would definatly recommend the course. It goes far more in depth into business and the management involved, when compared to AS/A2 Business studies.
I found after the course I had a far better knowledge of business than other people I know who done the A-level.
Yes the assignments can be very long. Although it all depends on what grade you are looking to get. If you are looking to get a distinction you need to cover everything. In my view this is a good thing, as it gets things "drilled" into your mind.
Although I recommend taking an AS in addition to the BTEC, in something fairly unrelated. (I did Psychology AS+A2, as i did the NC) to broaden your work.

Good luck with your choices
:yeah:
