Legally GPs are only obliged to issue fit to return note/sick notes for illnesses 7+ days, however my work place told me to get one even though I've only be sick for 4 days. What do I do?

Employers can set their own absence/illness policy, in line with statutory requirements, which you agreed to when you accepted the job. If the policy includes getting a sick note for <7 days then that's what you'll have to do. You'll probably have to pay for it. Does the company not have a self-certification procedure for <7 days? Most do.
