Advice for doing a two-week placement at my old secondary school watch

    • Thread Starter

Hi, I'm going into my third year of English and Creative Writing at university and before our term begins I'm doing two weeks of unpaid work at my old secondary school's English department in preparation for my PGCE.

I know I should've done my placements by know but I've only just decided to give teaching a try after being advised by friends and family, so I have a few questions for anybody willing to help me out:

    1. I have no idea what to expect so does anybody have any tips/advice/insight into what classroom volunteer work may entail? Will I be solely observing or given chance to teach?

    2. I've heard a lot of people say that male English teachers are like gold dust and that there's a good chance my PGCE application will more likely be accepted based on the fact that I'm male, is this true?

    3. I think I'm being predicted an overall 2:2 though I'm obviously aiming for higher. Will this mean I cannot apply for a PGCE or will it mean I may be put to the back of the queue?

Sorry I know there's a lot of questions. Any help for any/all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time! 😀

Have you talked to your secondary school about what to expect with volunteering with them?
Are you going to a festival?
